About searching:
As you have probably already found, the integrated forum search-engine can be a pain to use when searching for information in some of the long-long threads. Mike (user insideout) has come up with an elegant solution to this - involving the browser "Firefox" and a plugin called "ScrapBook". This really enhances searches over many-many pages, like the giant error-fixing threads.

Mike has put together an easy-to-follow howto, found at: http://mikeinak.googlepages.com/home

The GroupDIY Gmail account:

Go to http://www.gmail.com
Username: groupdiy
Password: thelab
(Please use this account only for stuff worth some degree of permanent archiving, otherwise use photobucket or the Twin-X service)

When uploading, send to both this address (groupdiy@googlemail.com) and also the backup address (groupdiy2@googlemail.com) - so we have a backup in case someone messes up the common mailbox.

PLEASE NOTE: Do not access the account by imap/pop (i.e. from your email client) - use the web interface. This because it seems that we are loosing content due to some email clients erasing read posts on gmail.

ATTENTION: - We have outphased the Groupdiy Gmail account due to problems with unknown users deleting material. Now we have our local "Technical Documents" section ...

Hey just tried to log into the gmail but it's trying to make me put in a new password, and it won't accept one under 8 characters (I tried to enter the old password as the new one). I didn't want to change it so if an admin would like to and update it here that would be great.

Damn, not good changing password without notifying the group here.

We better outphase use of this account, use the "Technical Documents" section instead....

Yep ! someone changed the password  >:(  (wrong move or on purpose ?)

Anyway, like Jakob said, we better use "Technical Documents" section on this website (groupdiy.com) as gmail account was a good solution for a closed community but not suitable anymore because there are people around here who 're not diy-friendly.

But what about bigger files than 1Mb ? (I got a 10 Go ftp Im not using that I could dedicate for those files)

Btw who's in charge for the gmail account backup  to get files back ?  :(
finding the sweet spot of your comp, and then realizing the bypass switch's on....

Files that are too large to post in the tech docs can be emailed to Ethan, he will then attach them.

We need to stop using the gmail account, Google has been restructuring it and it's not a stable platform... We MAY look into a google site, they've got a template laid out for document sharing and such. Google docs is a great service as well, easy to share your own files from your own documents and have everything spread out across the forum's users. That way, no one person can delete or modify things.

I wonder if something like github might be a good replacement.

I know I'm new here, but how about dropbox.com?

I've been using it for a while and it has some nice (and easy to use) sharing features as well as public folders/links.

You can also set read-write/read only access.

Great idea. But one caveat. I'm a programmer by day-job and the git command line can be daunting to the uninitiated. Perhaps a better option is bitbucket. This uses mercurial as the revision control system which has a much easier to use command line with more understandable error messages.

Whether it's github or bitbucket, DRCS is perfect for this kind of thing. Especially as things can be added, corrected and changed over time. All the changes are tracked and all the revisions are kept. Trusted users have write access. The others read only.
