Anyone else tried this one?

My tube preamp has noise issues and I'm waiting for some new tubes. Filter caps are new. It's homemade and who knows what lurks?

But in the meantime, I want to record some bass parts soon so I bread boarded the Grey Box. One of the few good sandstate circuits I could find on the net that are designed for bass A jfet into 3 transistors , 24 volts.

It sounded quite nice but noise at the fet input was touchy. I then built it on vero with the input cap wired close as practical between the jack and the fet gate leg bent up. Pretty darn quiet now and it passed the first record test.
No tone control, just plain good IMO. Nice design Sean MacLennan !

Cheers,
Lance

quoted from the designer...

"I used a 2N5458 for the FET. Other FETs could be used. I would not recommend the common J201 since it would be running at it's maximum Idss"

So I used what I had,a 2N5457 , but I admit I didn't compare specs.
For NPN's I used BC550.
