thanks. no i would not write off these capsules. i've done some research on sp1 ,603 and 990 mods. lots of things to try and to learn from.i'll check out your folder at yahoo. i dont think ive looked at those mods.
 
In occasion of replacement of transistors I shall not tell anything, but replacement of ceramic condensers on film with greater capacitance affects positively quality of a sound, unequivocally.

I know this is an old thread. I have a couple of the MCA SP1's. If you see this Marik, I would like to know as well why the Shoeps circuit doesn't work so well w/ LD capsules? Reason I ask is I have a Dale M7 where I accidentally punctured the diaphram on one side, so it'll have to be delegated to cardiod use only, so that's what got me thinking . . . .
 
Easiest way to increase the polarisation voltage:
Replace the 6.2v zener diode that feeds that circuit with a higher value until you reach + 60 volts.
(But don't go higher than 60 volts!)
