ok folks, I'm getting married in May, and I've asked a musician with a lot more talent than me to play an acoustic guitar before and after the ceremony.

I need about 60 minutes of music. Good acoustic songs, not too hard to learn, the type that people will hear the guitar part, and start murming the words. Know what I mean?

suggestions for songs please :)

I had a good friend (professional musician) sing "I'll be"" by edwin mccain and it was perfect. He has a great voice for that song and performed it beautifully, I was pleasantly surprised what a good song choice it was.

also, I was in charge of the music for my wedding (dec 2008) and its funny how my "playlist" I preparred was overly complicated.  once we got going, my buddy sang the one song just as we started, I ran Frank Sinatra compilation during the dinner and my DJ spun standard if not terrible old dance stuff and everyone loved it. (Our song ended up being "Gettin jiggy wit it", which I think is a great pop tune but it ran into "you turn me right round" which horrified me half way through our first dance!) my point is, dont over think it. everyone had a great time and they dont remember that the music was the same as anyother wedding. Its kinda what they expect.

We had a string trio play all the wedding standards.  But when the wedding party was exiting, they played The Cure's "Just Like Heaven".  That was a hit with everyone under 38 and over 14.

Congratulations!

And now, my suggestion: Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel

I don't know how appropriate that would be for a wedding, but there you go. :)

Speaking of Gabriel, if you're Genesis fans, there's "Horizons" - the short solo guitar piece just before "Supper's Ready" on Foxtrot.  We used that for our wedding party's entrance.  Perfect length for that too.

Congrats!
Marty's list is good for four weddings and a funeral, and seven brides for seven brothers.  Great list.
I remember a wedding with "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" in the middle of the ceremony.  It was down tempo and all verses sung- it seemed to take an hour!

I play in an acoustic duo, and we do weddings a lot. People seem to love the two guitar thing with vocal harmonies ;D
Here's some suggestions from what we play....

Here's some of our more LOVE orientated songs (As in LOVE in a positive way....no break up songs... ha ha)
ALL I WANT IS YOU - U2
STEAL MY KISSES - Ben Harper
EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE - The Police
BROWN EYED GIRL - Van Morrison
I BELONG TO YOU - Lenny Kravitz
WONDERFUL TONIGHT - Eric Clapton
ISN'T SHE LOVELY - Stevie Wonder
YOU'RE ALL I HAVE – Snowpatrol
BEAUTIFUL LOVE - The Afters (prob not so well known, but it's the song i proposed to my wife with) ;D
OCEAN WIDE - The Afters (also prob not very well known, but was one of our wedding songs..... very nice when done acoustically)
CHANGE THE WORLD - Eric Clapton
IF YOU COULD ONLY SEE - Tonic
DIAMONDS ON THE INSIDE - Ben Harper
SAVE TONIGHT - Eagle Eye Cherry
NOTICED - Mutemath

And some of our not so LOVE focused songs (however, if it's at a dinner or reception, we've found that people just like good songs,as opposed to wanting love songs........... they just want to party!!!..........cermonies are different however)
PROUD MARY - Creedence Clearwater Revival
HIGH & DRY - Radiohead
LAYLA - Eric Clapton
TEARS IN HEAVEN - Eric Clapton
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE - The Police
FREE FALLING - Tom Petty
STOP AND STARE - One Republic
ALL FALL DOWN - One Republic
TAKE A PICTURE - Filter

CONTROL - Mutemath

SITTING WAITING WISHING - Jack Johnson
FLAKE - Jack Johnson
MORNING LIFE - Feeder
FEELING THE MOMENT - Feeder
GOOD RIDDANCE - Greenday
SAY IT AIN'T SO - Weezer
SHADOW OF THE DAY - Linkin Park (I'm sure I'm gonna get flamed for that one...but our version sounds quite nice..........)

Our set list is a lot longer as we have a lot of well known New Zealand songs (which I'm sure not many of you have ever heard before) and quite a few originals too

I'm sure there may not be so many classic songs in there...... People seem to quote classic songs round here that I've never even heard of........ I blame my lack of age for that one.......... Or maybe it's my location here in New Zealand.........

dont know why this post popped up but, congratulations.  my advice.  (not songs) is dont let the photographer and maitre de (did i spell that right?)  tell you what to do all day long. make sure you enjoy the wedding day. those guys(girls?) work for you not the opther way around.

Me (bass) and the two other guitarists from my "band" played  Metallica's Nothing Else Matters in a kinda almost unplugged fashion for the drummer at his wedding, in church while they were out signing the register....none out of the three of us had the bottle to sing it though....

Possibly not a helpful suggestion though!
