Hi all, I've done a search for Low ESR Electrolytic capacitors and can't seem to find any info that tells me conclusively whether these are going to work the same in the G1176, GSSL Clone and SSL 9K projects. Having a difficult time finding some values locally that are the non-Low ESR type.

Thanks in advance, it's much appreciated.

Steve.

Check with Gus on the best brands for low esr. He lives in the US but still might be of some help.
Kev and the gang would be my first stop.

... or is the Group DIY Up-date just late this week ???

BladeSG,
is all seriousness just use some 105deg caps from Jaycar and get the circuit working.
You may just be happy to stop there.
If you must ....
Farnell , RS and WES can help with low ESR.
there may be a local Adelaide specialist that can help.

Thanks Kev and CJ. So I can take it then that Low ESR Electrolytic caps aren't going to be a bad option in any audio DIY projects if I can't source normal caps?

I'm just getting some parts together to start another GSSL Clone and then a G1176.

Thanks,

Steve.

Just to clarify, since it looks like there may be a misunderstanding here... ESR means "equivalent series resistance," and the ideal is for that to be LOW. So, low ESR types are BETTER than other, non-low-ESR types.

If all you have access to is Low ESR, you're doing just fine, my friend.

I used nichicon UPW series caps in a G-SSL I made, its their advertised "low ESR" cap and comes in a brown wrapper. Digikey and mouser both carried the line when I last ordered (except digikey calls them PW I think). I use these caps I guess in places where other guys here like panasonic FC series, cleaner more hi-fi ish sounding circuits, although I wouldnt describe the cap as hi-fi. Its smooth and has a nice midrange, hifi grungy maybe... anyway, I havent had any troubles in my G-SSL with those caps or in any other circuit Ive used them in. Try 'em out, they definitely definitely have a sound, they are clear sounding but definitely roll off the high end more than the panasonic FC's if you know those for a reference.

@soundguy: (that's the best avatar btw) How noticable is the difference in brands/types of these capacitors?

I'm a new at this DIY and electronics and I don't mind paying a little extra if it means better sound quality. I used 'Samxon', 'Elgen', 'Lelon', 'Hitano' and 'Jamicon' elecrolytics in my first GSSL clone. Are those OK.....

Thanks,

Steve.

soundguy: your avatar is distracting. I'm sitting here, focusing hard on not doing my work, and you got me all distracted :(

steve, do a search, there is constant discussion about cap types. The ones I mentioned sound good, are available from common suppliers and are affordable, I like them, you might not, take a listen.

My avatar is causing commotion. You shoudl see her walk down the street...
