A very crazy busy summer here in Amherst.

Thought I would at least throw up some quick pics.

Here are a few shots in the wood shop last spring.
Note all the DOAs and Iron !!

The frame is now ready to move into the electronics shop
Get flipped on it’s side on a work table and begin the long
Process of wiring this guy up.  This will probably take me
The next year or so to finish.

Here are the power distro panel and XLR panels
ready to install in the case.

Bottom of the case on it’s side.. wires everywhere

This will be under the meter bridge.  Iron, Summing amps,
line amps, headphone amp and M1200B mic pres.

Besides all the wiring I still need to build a 1U XLR panel
that will be used for 3  2 track ins/outs.

I will use Mike's (Hairball) 990s for balanced receivers
for the 2 track returns.

That's All for now.  Another update in a few months.

What an amazing journey!

Inspiring, like.

That will be one sweet console that will live on forever  :)

Wow that's amazing work Gary. I've never actually seen Dorroughs installed in meter bridge along with VUs in that way--a very nice, useful, touch!

Thanks Guys for all the nice words ! :) :)

This was actually an Idea I got from the fine folks at Wheatstone.  Wish I could
claim it as original !!

Happy New Year to all.

1200 feet of 8 colour Mogami W2944 console cable later
the frame is now about 99.5% wired!  This wire BTW is
real nice to work with.  Would be nice cable for any internal
Wire for projects.. Recommended !!

I thought I would use the original “Waters” Sphere Master fader pot
For the Control room level control.  WRONG.. Its left-right tracking
Turned out to be VERY BAD.  Old age I guess. (Like me ha-ha)

Jeff Steiger at Classic API to the rescue again. Check out this precision
Elma 10k stereo rotary fader.  This guy works perfect.
Expensive but recommended!!

Here is the Headphone Amp.  It’s a Wayne and Roger design that’s a
Class A wire with gain Amp.  This guy will work as a great line amp
Too if you require one.  Check it out here:

The Headphone control panel will be inserted in the Producer/Keyboard
Desktop.. Yet to be built.

Sphere114_headphone_control72.jpg

The 2-track send/return xlr/connector panel is built and inserted into the desk.
This is set up for 3-2 tracks.  2 of them are balanced xlr.  Note the Balanced
Receivers are setup on my DOA receiver PCBs using Mike’s (Hairball)
990 clones.

Sphere114_2tr_return_bot72.jpg

Sphere114_2tr_return_top72.jpg

The 3rd 2-track send/return are RCA in and outs.  The Green PCB is a 5534 based Quad
Fader Amp that I had left over from another project.  I am using
This guy to change -10dbv to Sphere internal levels.

Sphere114_level_RCA72.jpg

I got the Meter Bridge on its side Next to the main frame so I can wire up
The Connectors between the two.  The Molex connector is for  +16/-16v for
The meter buffer/drivers, +24v for the Electrodyne console Osc. And all the
Meter lighting LEDs.  The other connector is a 50 pin D connector that is
Taking care of all the Audio feeds.  The meter bridge can be disconnected
From the frame and removed for maintenance duties of all the stuff underneath.

Sphere114_passing_audio72.jpg

If you look close note alll meters reading "0VU"

Sphere114_meter_connectors72.jpg

Left to do:

Testing all the desk sub systems and changing/fixing problems
Cover arm rest.
Make the Producer/Keyboard desk that will fit under patch-bay.
Fix all the Patch-bay labels.
Build a small roll a round rack for the PSUs
Build more EQs.
Install the Talk Back Amp and Mic.

More Pics…

Note the 12 M1200B Mic Pre cards added

The end is near… months away !!

I’ve had a 500 series discreet fet comp project on the drawing
Board for the last 3 years that I am dying to get back to.

I’ll do an update this spring

GARY

Thanks guys for all your kind words !! :)

Been busy these days with lots of post winter cleanup outside in the yard and
keeping Jeff in goodies so my time/progress on this project has been slow
the last couple of months.

I have been writing a service manual for this guy while I can remember
how I built this Desk while its still on its side on the work table.
I got about an hour of wiring left and the PSU rack yet to build.  So maybe
soon I can run something thru it besides tones and CD music  ;) :)

I should be able to do a finale update in June or July if the House and/or Wife
doesn't keep me to busy around here this spring.

GARY
