Just read a post from another thread about a moog in 500 series format and was curious as to whether there are any DIY synths in 500 series format or has anyone here ever considered making one?

it can work if you take general purpose synth modules and set them up to make a specific "effect" as moog has done here.  but due to space constraints the 500 format is not a good match for general purpose synth modules, so simply porting existing designs over to a 500 module is a bad idea.

The DIY modular synth format of many if not most is called 'eurorack'. Go to www.muffwiggler.com for more info.
