I've seen lots of EQ circuits with baxandall controls around one opamp and a sweepable mid around another opamp stage. Besides the fact that using two inverting stages makes it easy to bypass the EQ is there some reason why the two stages couldnt be combined around one opamp?

On the verge of ordering some pcbs to try it

PS - I love this forum

I had something similar (back in 80's) - a "top boost" and a Wien-ish mid control in one stage, so I guess something can be done in this manner.

Sorry, forgot the details.

The Bass and treble shelving EQ are spaced far enough apart that they don't significantly interact or interfere with each other. Cheating a  third peaking section between the two can be done but it isn't as sharp and can interact more than using a second opamp for the midrange EQ. An additional benefit of using the second opamp is you get the polarity back into correct polarity with input, so simple bypass does not create a polarity inversion.
