Ok so I decided to do a little testing tonight on some mic's I had on hand or built over the past year or so.  These are not scientific but I kept the same distance and used all the same equipment when I recorded these samples tonight.  I did adjust the gain on the c414 and u87 to keep it in the same ball park.  I hope this helps anyone looks to build a diy mic or help to make choices in the area.  My horn was about 24" away from the microphones.

All mics were ran through my EZ1073 mic pre into my MOTU 2408MKII into my Mac at 24bits.

First is the AKG C414 B-uls sock from the factory bought around 2003 or so.  EX1073 @ 30 gain setting.

Second is my Diy U87 from Danny here at Group DIY.  It features a cinemag transformer and the Puelso Capsule Peluso PK-87 that was a group buy on here.  EZ1073 gain at 35.

Third is a Diy of an Elam 251 in an apex 460 that I messed up and sent to JJ Audio to fix and install all his bells and whistles for his dutch microphone.  I already had a GE 6072 five star tube in it with Tim's Capsule and the AMI T14 and he did all the rest that he does.  Paper in oil caps and old russian resistors he installed and fixed the power supply. EZ1073 gain at 25

Fourth is the stock Chunger Build of his C12.  It has an AMI T14 in it  with the stock apex tube and capsule.  EZ1073 gain at 25

Fifth is the Chunger Build of his C12 with the AMI T14 and Tim's Capsule and GE five star 6072 from my Elam 251 JJ audio microphone.  EZ1073 gain at 25

Last is now the JJ Audio Elam 251 Build with the Stock Apex Capsule and tube along with an AMI T14 transformer.  I hope it doesn't hurt the mic with all this garbage in it, hahahahaha.  EZ1073 gain at 25

#4 seems a little "harsher" than the other tube mics maybe?

I'm so enamored with the  DU87 (cause I own two with diff comp selections  ;D).  It has a nice weight in the opening glissando in the lower frequencies.
The AKG414 was the first nice mic I ever bought for my crappy recordings (to 4track cassette, my friend likened it to "taking a beautiful crystal and flushing it down the toilet").  It sounds strong and even.  And no I can't elaborate on what I mean by "strong"

So Here is another test I have been messing with this week.  I recorded the sax with my new tube setup.

Chung/Mat C12 mic and PSU
AMI T14
1950's 6072 Tube from Christian (love it)
CT12 from Tim
Redco 7pin wire

Let me know what you think.
