You might try looking for a Phillips TDA1013B.
A single chip, 4W into 8 ohm, variable gain; I have used these for several small portable speakers as well as headphone amps. I bought a box of 50 a couple years ago for $35.

Half way down the page it mentions OPA547 which is a conventional op amp config but 10x more powerful, 10 mA quiescent current, 90nV noise and stable at low gain. Not sure what the distortion would be driving 8 ohms but it would only need to reach about 3 volts to make 1 watt. Theres also a PCB for sale but the pad for C1 seems a little small.
