Any suggestions on a replacement for a L7918CV by ST, it is EOL and none of the usual suspects have any stock.

I can find lot's of 1AMP canidates, but 1.5amp versions are scarce on the ground.

Specs, -18v, 1.5AMP, TO220-3, doV 1.4v, 125 degree C

Datasheet is here

Can anyone tell me what the TO220-3 vs TO220-3FP package differences are, can't seem to find it anywhere.

According to that data sheet, the FP is a "dual gauge" package, and as such the thermal tab is much thicker.

The thermal data for both packages are identical.

Ok, that makes sense.

Did some further checking, even though ST lists the L79 as a active product, they no longer offer a 18 volt version.

The highest voltage offered is 15 volts.

I came across this article which talks about altering the voltage of a fixed regulator by the addition of two resistors between Vout and Gnd (R1-470R, R2-~300R).

Perhaps this could work if I get the -15 volt part.

if it's acceptable to add two resistors, why not just bodge in an LM317 and be done with it?

That thought had crossed my mind ;).

I've actually been able to talk to a tech at Ashly who told me a 1A part will work just fine in that circuit and there's plenty of those on the ground.

So to keep things clean, I'll most likely go that way.
