Just reading up on ribbon mics and I have some bad pickups around with good magnets...the poles seem oriented right but are they strong enough?

"it depends"
There are various magnets being used for guitar pickups, judging from the topic, I assumed ribbon tweeters (but I now see this discussion is in "microphones" :) ) and usually neodymium/ rare earth magnets are used for those. Not sure how it is with microphones.
Guitar pickups can be alnico or ferrite.

They are too weak I think at least the ones I have. I was just simultaneously looking at ribbon mic builds and looking at some broken pickups and got ideas. I found a good magnet supplier for a future project.

you will want something more strong provably, yeah old ribbons use less strong magnets than modern.
the width of the magnet limit the high frequency just to have in consideration.

at the end they should work. provably I would try with ceramics that have a more strong field.
