Hi Folks,

I've been looking into getting a transparent compressor that I can use in my home demo studio, mainly for use in controlling the dynamics of acoustic instruments.

I've had a look around this site - there seem to be a lot of colour compressors but I couldn't see anything that's specifically transparent. I'm thinking of things like an Aphex Compellor, FMR RNC, Atomic Squeezebox, etc.).

Are there any projects that would be suitable as transparent compressors?

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris,

I built some gear in the last years and the most transparent compressor IMHO is THAT4301,

Here's the thread where it all started:

You can use perfboard or etch your own PCB's,

This http://www.thatcorp.com/Design_Notes.shtml is a good place to start with this easy but great no-sounding compressor. I use it in every mix for invisible glue, in Soft Knee mode you can slam it to 10-15dB of Gain Reduction without audible artifacts

The D-AOC tube vactrol opto limiter is pretty transparent (if you want it).

There is also quite a lot of ways to setup the vactrol/sidechain to tailor the characteristics.

I like it a lot for strong limiting on bass- which can be tricky for some compresser/limiters.
But the D-AOC handles it with ease and without futzing the bottom end on the  * l o w *  notes.

Plus it's quite easy to build to a high level of awesomeness.

Cheers
