Hello!

If I wanted something in the direction of
Buzz SOC optical compressor 1.1/20/essence,
are there any diy options?

The Forssell Opto limiter: http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=16016.0

I don't think it's available as a PCB anymore, but it wouldn't be too difficult to lay one out. It will be harder to find a complete set of schematics. Here is the best place to start: http://groupdiy.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=16016.0;attach=12751

I learned a ton putting mine together.

Cheers

That's looking very interesting.
There are mono 19", stereo 19" and 500-versions?

JLM Audio has a nice and insanely small!  opto compressor pcb  - one needs to combine it with input/output amp pcbs to make a complete compressor -  as it is just the sidechain and opto functionality.

You can find details on the JLM Audio web site.

But it surely does sound good - I think it is the most 'liquid' sounding of the vactrol type compressor/limiters I have built.

It integrated quite nicely with a neotek strip I racked and reworked  - the neotek provided the input and output amp functions.

Not much by way of controls however - just a 'compression' pot and a 3-position ratio switch - but that may well be part of the reason it sounds so good on most things! Virtually always 'on' in my rack.

Cheers

IIRC this isn´t available anmore. But Joe released his LA500 which is the 500 rack version of what you mentioned. It´s one of the best compressors ever made IMHO, a totally no-brainer for that price. Highly recommended!

Thanks!

I have the JLM LA500. Very happy with it.
But it's a one-trick pony.

Soon finishing a Forssell opto comp ..hopefully :)
