I'm curious. What's the difference (if there is any) between a blackface and a blue in regards to sound? I know the blue's are older, but I don't know if they sound any different. Also, which one is the DIY project based on? I got boards coming and can't wait to start stuffing!

Do a search.
There are many black faces and many silver faces.
the G1176 is a silver face. The Class-A and fully passive front end were long gone by then.
The original blue was noisy. That's why the early black ones were called 1176"LN" (low noise) versions.
