capacitors could be made integral to the XLR connector body
Years ago (as in more than 20 years now) an acquaintance who worked in the telcom industry turned me on to BNC connectors which are built like that. The barrel of the BNC is isolated from chassis, but the body of the connector is metal and has spring fingers to contact the chassis. Between the barrel of the BNC and the metal body of the connector is either a coaxial capacitor or an array of SMD caps for low inductance, so that the barrel is isolated from chassis by a high impedance at 60Hz, but low impedance in the MHz range and above. Useful for AES3-id, S/PDIF, MADI, etc. that are defined as unbalanced connections.
