So you figure you'll have the CRC boards for the SSL by the end of the month?
I registered on your site hoping to get an email notification when they come in. Thanks for making those boards handy. 8)

Hi Rochey,

just wondering can those 3 Button Control Boards switch out a resistor or capicitor without  using a relay . i am building  a pico, so i thought it would look good no need for those expensive switches

Would the boards work as switch in this application.

Hello Skal1,

the 3 button controller simply switches a 3.3V signal on an output pin. What you send it to from there, is entirely up to you.

The relay pcb's are a very simple arrangement, transistor with a 1KOhm resistor attached to the base. The emitter is tied to ground, and there's a diode in parallel with the relay (that's connected between VDD and the collector).

to borrow a schematic from another website (http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com) the schematic looks like this.

let me chew on things a little more to see how they could be hacked to make a switch

cheers

A relay truly is the most flexible answer.

You CAN switch using a FET so long as the voltage range at the drain and source is known and stays within a certain range... if you're switching a resistor in a control voltage chain that's one thing, but if you're trying to route audio signals, SSL discovered that you really have to use voltages at the gate which EXCEED the range of the signal flowing through the Drain/Source path...

So It gets a little complicated... whereas a relay is almost invariably simple by comparison.

hi Rochey

look forward to your reply MY idea is to use your 3 button as simple open and close application but hey  i might be missing something.

Hello Skal1,

I had a long chat with Keith on the way back from work. I think there's a little confusion on what your trying to do.

Can you post part of the schematic here, and circle the bit your trying to replace? I'm not an expert on the Pico I'm afraid.

Hi Rochey ,

Wayne has taken down all schematic, may i have not explain my self properly.

Needs
---------
1} replace toggle switches with your 3 button board

2} object of toggle  is to open or short  a resistor or capacitors.

i understand your circuit works as trigger for a relay boards so i  was just thinking i could lose the relay ..

Basically all  i need the 3 button do is open and shut ..

I do think it will  not be so simple  though

Use the relays. For a one off, $10 on a guaranteed working solution with 15 minutes soldering work.
Title: Re: GSSL Mods and other DIY boards from Expat Audio
Post by: skal1 on October 14, 2009, 08:42:07 PM
Yeah Rochey i work that out now , so if i needed too switch 6 different switches i would need 2 of  3 button   boards and  6  of your Single Ended Signal Relay, then i would need 6 relays  to switch the corresponding point .. or i could  fab a board that had 6  pn222 transistor and 6 single  ended relays

Is this correct.

The originals I used were from rapidonline.com

However, I believe that Bryan (Ptownkid) might be stocking them soon.

Just a quick note - Any orders recieved as of the 1st of Novemeber will not be shipped until the 16th of November at the earliest.

Sorry about this - my real world job has me on a 2 week business trip in Asia. There's no way I can ship pcb's in that time.

My apologies if this causes many of you inconvenience, both Keith and I appreciate your business very very much.

The switches used can be found at:

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/E-Switch/LP4OA1PBCTR/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvxtGF7dlGNpvWCJOEi9PJT6GwxOxDeAjs%3d

http://www.mouser.com/catalog/catalogUSD/640/1612.pdf
(careful with these, some of htem are interlocking, some are momentary)

http://www.rapidonline.com/Electronic-Components/Switches/Tactile-Switches/LED-Illuminated-PCB-switches/72855
(these are good)

RS Electronics (RSWWW) also stocks them (search PB613)

Ptownkid and Expat Audio will soon start stocking the switches as well. But, it's a large order we have to make from the manufacturer, so we're both saving :)

I don't want to be a jerk, but what's up with the shipping costs? The two boards I want to order would easily fit in a small flat rate box ($4.95 shipping), but your site wants to charge me $10.35 for a medium flat rate box. I think I'm going to wait for DIYPartsSupply to get these because shipping a meter plus the boards from Canada would probably cost about the same.
Title: Re: GSSL Mods and other DIY boards from Expat Audio - ALL IN STOCK
Post by: Rochey on November 11, 2009, 10:26:35 AM
Hello therecordingart,

I've just had a look in the shipping options in the cubecart (the open source web-shop we use).
Flat rate box was originally chosen because we started out with the metal API500 cases, and I was concerned about the envelopes not being strong enough.

Small flat rate box isn't available as an option in the shipping module. I'll continue to look into it, and once the update comes on to cubecart, update appropriately.

Your more than welcome to wait for Bryan to get these boards in, they should ship to him over the weekend. If your only building one-offs, it seems that his service is a better one to get boards from. He works out cheaper than ordering from multiple suppliers, overpaying, then paying shipping on each piece.

Cheers

Rochey

Cool...I appreciate the response. I didn't want to come off like a jerk or even a penny pincher over a few dollars, but I thought I'd bring it up because it looked funny. It's hard to not look like a schmuck when offering any sort of criticism or questioning something by text.

Anyway, I really appreciate the development of these products and the service provided. Keep up the good work!

Updated Shipping Recommendations
http://www.expataudio.com/expatshop/index.php?act=viewDoc&docId=5

Quote
Estimated delivery times are provided "post dropoff" to the local post office.
"dropoff" is done typically around 5 days after order. (or sooner). Occasionally, there are some delays (the joys of running a side business like this)

PCB's can be shipped in flat rate envelopes. This is strongly suggested, as the envelopes are significantly larger and stronger than regular envelopes. Making them less likely to break, and less likely to become lost.

Domestic (USA) shipments

USPS flat rate envelope offers some degree of tracking. The envelopes themselves are quite large, and rather rigid, making them less likely to be lost.

Delivery normally takes a week or so.

International Shipping.

Due to the calculator that USPS uses to feed our online shop, for international destinations, every single option for shipping is provided.
However, to make shipping easier for all involved (and more reliable) here are our recommendations.

For International shipping, with FULL tracking, please select Express Mail Flat Rate.
Delivery can be expected, once accepted by the local post office to be between 5 to 10 business days.

For International Shipping, with confirmation of shipping (but NO tracking), please select "Priority Mail Flat Rate"
Delivery can be expected, once accepted by the local post office to be between 10 to 15 business days.
For all other questions, please feel free to email questions at expat audio dot com.

Cheers

Hi,

your vu driver manual says that you can use any 215x or 218x vca. Silly question, I;m sure, but is there any reason why it shouldn't work with 2001, or 202c etc?

          Kindest regards,

Well... It won't fit, is one thing.

The 2001/202 is a large-can, and the VU driver is laid out around an 8-pin SIL format.

Hey Rochey your inbox is full!

I purchased a few of your boards a few months ago and am happy with the results.

I have a question on a new purchase-

For your relay control board, can you tell me why to not go with
G6K-2P DC4.5 whos coil switches @ 3V?
Would not this remove the need for a transistor if using the control board, or is the 12v needed elsewhere too?
Title: Re: GSSL Mods and other DIY boards from Expat Audio - ALL IN STOCK
Post by: Rochey on February 12, 2010, 11:17:49 AM
I guess you could use the lower voltage, however, your current requirements on the 3.3V rail will increase significantly. (it takes POWER to switch the relay, so, lower the voltage, increase the current).

I haven't tried the 4.5V relays myself. I suggest you give it a try and let us know how you get on. ;)

Hi Rochey & Keith

Just a couple of questions from a Gssl virgin  :)

Is the 2150 the only VCA that can be used in the turbo board, or can I substitute a 2180 etc?

Also, I'm thinking of putting 2 Gssl's in one 2u box to save space etc and want to use turbo boards, vu boards and crc boards. Will one crc board be sufficient for both gssl's and turbo/vu boards if i'm carefull with choice of bridge rectifier etc, or do i need 2?

Cheers guys

So my only advice/wish would be a short confirmation email for an order or the shipping. Especially on non US orders its sometimes a long time trough customs etc. It would be a pity to wait for weeks just to find out somehow the order didnt come trough ;)

Hi,

those switches come as standard with a cap. The exact cap is "03", found on the bottom page of the datasheet.
http://www.highlyelec.com.tw/product/ca2/3-7.pdf

I also have an Front Panel Designer file here somewhere for the board with the switches.
EDIT: Download from here: http://www.tendolla.com/designgallery/main.php/d/280-1/example+board_fpd
Rename the file to a .fpd

When using the VU meter board wouldn't adding a switch for input, output and GR metering without an active buffer cause distortion on the audio signal?

Also are the digital relay switches only for phantom, pad, and polarity or can you use them for any on/off function.  That would be nice.
Title: Re: GSSL Mods and other DIY boards from Expat Audio - ALL IN STOCK
Post by: Rochey on July 07, 2010, 11:16:28 AM
your right, however, it'd add a very very small amount of distortion - in the same way an LA2A or 1176 does.
In fact, all the classic compressors monitor the output in the same way.

You could put an active buffer accross the output (secondary of the transformer) however, you do potentially spoil your galvanic isolation.

Regarding the digital relay switches, the controller can be used for anything. It essentially debounces the switches, and outputs 3v3 levels to drive the LED and another target (such as a relay card). You can use the controller to drive either the differential signal relay card, or the single ended relay card. (http://www.expataudio.com/expatshop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=10)

You can also very easily create your own relay circuits - the circuitry to drive 3V3 to a 12V or 24V relay is very simple.

Hy

Do you have any idea when the digital ctrl front end mic pre will be available again?

Would love to use it for a SSL9K pre.

So with this board i ad P48, Polarity and a Pad to the mic, isnt it?

That means i only need, besides the  board, +48V and some PSU für the Board.

Otherwise i have to use a JLM Kit.

am I right, that for ordering the Turbo and CRC boards, I have to register me on the Expat site, and order it there?

Becaus I've looked several times in the last time on the Expat site, but the Turbo's were always "out of stock" ???

Many thanks,

However, I think they will be in Dallas before I am.

Once I get confirmation that they've arrived, I'll update the stock level on the website.

Folks, just wanted to update those of you with outstanding orders, and offer apologies.

The new Bambino has been sucking any and all spare time I have for shipping orders (never mind designing!)

For those of you with orders, rest assured you'll be receiving details from the expat audio online store of when they will ship.

Oh, and warm thanks to those of you who have ordered the new Uber-PSU board!

Thanks again

Junes,

I don't think I saw your email. can you PM me?

Turbo's are on their way - however, we'll be moving to a separate online store, and distribution center soon.
I expect that to take a few weeks. The standard expat audio store will be closing to be replaced with a smoother system.

I'm sorry for the delay caused by this. Once the changes are complete, shipping will be same day where possible, with a dedicated distribution centers in London and Philadelphia.(very fast, very efficient)

Thanks again

Hello Junes, (and others)

Turbo boards finally arrived, but the manufacturer used a thin see through yellow silkcreen instead of the white silkscreen that I had requested. On Black Soldermask (color of PCB) you can barely  see the text etc.

I threw a sh*tfit with them. I received notice that a replacement set of boards shipped today.

It'll be a week or so until delivery. I hope to have the new online store up and running by then.

Hi Rochey,

I have some questions regarding your 3 button controller.

Im thinking to use your boards for a monitor controller project

One board for selecting between 3 sources, and another to switch between different speaker sets.

The exclusive on/off option would increase the price?

About the switches.. Id prefer to use some bigger illuminated switches. What kind of poles / switching type should they be? And about led powering?

Thanks

Giacomo

Hi,

Interlocking doesn't increase the cost. It's a software mod. However, I need to create a new line item on the store to do that. Stay tuned!

Switches - you only need a spst switch, I have another thread with those details I posted very recently. In essence, your pulling a pin on the microcontroller to ground. If nothing is connected to the pin, it pulls high.

LEDs are driven through the outputs of the board. You can drive upto 20mA on each gpio.

I'm available for live chat through the website from time to time, so if I do pop up in a chat window on the site, don't be a stranger! :)

Hi,

i came from germany and my english is not so good. ok, i have a problem with my vu driver board an the hairball hb-8027 vu meter.
i build this in my gssl-buss-compressor rev 11 from 01-2013. the vu meter is working, led's are on, but the gain reduction only goes up-3dbvu and then stops abruptly.
even at very high compression. Adjust the resistor of the r4 also brings nothing. i used for c4-c6 wima film caps and c1-c3 ceramic caps. two 5532ap opamps and one 2180b vca. where could be the error?

thanks

I am designing a switcher around the 3 Button Controller and have some questions:

1. If I use 3VDC relays can I drive two relays, 10 mA (http://www.jameco.com/1/1/46717-v23042-c2108-b101-3-volt-dpdt-latching-relay-miniature.html) for both, directly from each board output?  I would be ordering the exclusive logic PIC so triggering two relays only at a time.

2. The output is selectable 3.3VDC or 0Vl.  Is that user selectable or programmed, and can the output handle it if I am grounding 12 VDC relays to 0Vl to activate them?

It's a great kit!
Mike
PS: Sorry, everyone's a critic, so my two cents is that the Mouser BOM is so cheap compared to the shipping that you could make it more convenient if you offer the parts for purchase, just like you offer the switches.  I would pay $6 to you rather than $8 to Mouser and usps for a $2 BOM.

No, I would ALWAYS use an npn transistor and a reversed diode to take the reverse EMF. Expecting the microcotnroller to do that is a little risky. 10mA really is the max you can drive from the microcontroller.

It's fixed by the power supply for the MSP430 microcontroller that's used. If you need to switch higher voltages, you need to use an NPN and a diode.

See: http://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/blog/relay-switch-circuit.html for details.

I understand. I've often sat and dreamt of doing this. I'll talk to the little company that does fulfilment for me to see if they could kit them up.

Hi Rochey,

I’m designing an "ultra low noise mic pre" based THAT 1580 as my final project for my college degree in Music Technology.

To achieve my goals I’m considering digitally controlling a THAT 1580 IC via a THAT 5171, so that I can keep the audio signal always on the PCB while at the same time avoiding noisy/expensive/mismatched dual-gang pots.

I’m interested in your three button controller board but I also need a rotary  gain controller for my THAT’s 1580/5171 based design.

Although I’m decent with analog circuitry, when it comes to digital circuitry I’m like Jon Snow – I know nothing.

How hard is it to implement such a fourth controller in your board?

Could you do it for me? How much would that cost?

Thanks

you'll need something that can convert between the rotary and the commands to the digital pot. use an arduino for a one off.
