Title: Preview: AOC51X
Post by: [silent:arts] on June 06, 2010, 10:23:12 AM
proud I was able to finish this PCB layout today:

51X optical comp by analag !!!  :)

before I order the first prototype PCBs tomorrow I want to include footprints for the Bourns potentiometers Jeff is using in his VPXXX amps. I just love their feel ...
(but I'm still unsure if I will do a custom order, which would be needed)

however, where are the features / options? ;D ;D ;D

simplified schematic (http://www.silentarts.de/DIY/AOC51X/AOC51X_rev01-Schematic-public.pdf)

1] transformers are Pikatron or Lundahl
2] jumpers  for the main audio path to select either +/- 24V, or +/-16V if you want to try other DOAs (anlags AHOA1 is best on +/-24V, sidechain is always +/-16V)
3] ribbon connector from the main to the control PCB. with this we can have the potentiometers centered on the front, and are ready for the D-AOC51X (Dual analag optical compressor 51X) - which will use the same audio PCBs but will have stepped Elma controls instead of potentiometers
4] VU buffer for watching the output level, meter zero and tracking potentiometers / switchable meter between output and gain reduction
5] stereo link switch with LED indicator
6] no true hardwire bypass this time. the relay connects the input to the output, leaving the input signal to the compressor

why ???

7] jumper selectable VU meter (working in bypass mode or not)
8] jumper selectable VU meter backlight (to indicate compressor in or not)

will let you know more once the prototype arrived :D

you're making this 51x thing very tempting...very nice.

Question: are these new bought haufe/picatrons you're using or scavenged ones from the many cheap lawo cards around?

the Pikatrons / Lundahls can be bought new. it is 1:2 for the input and 1:1 for the output.
I asked Pikatron which model they would recommend for this application, and they came up with the RÜP1263M and RÜP1265M. Lundahls are LL1540 and LL1517.

Looks really tight.
tube layouts are easier :D
while all my PCBs have been double sided yet it was the first time I needed to use vias.

not needed, there is a rectifier in the CV amp (side chain)

I should re-think the name - it is an analag opto compressor in the 51X form-factor, but (except of the same vactrol) not the same as the original tube D-AOC 8)

name suggestions anyone  ???

had some brainstorming with analag, added one resistor today for a better stereo link today.
rerouting was a pain ...

Bourns 51 potentiometers are added, and gives a far more better front panel layout.
I have contacted the german Bourns sales represent for a quote - if it is not too much I will place an order.

Frontpanel is ready in FPD - but have to pick up my daughter now.

will post more recent renderings, a rough frontpanel & a simplified schematic later or tomorrow.
an independent beta tester was found too - proto PCBs ordering time is tomorrow.

stay tuned ;)

with Sifam AL15 meters, my standard Elma knobs and "standard" potentiometers it could look something like this:

but I prefer the look (and feel) with the Bourns potentiometers:
(and I hope to get a fair quote for them today)

just noticed the Bourns is Series 51 - could be a sign ... :D :D :D

got a quote for the bourns 51 today: ouch  :o
lead time of ten weeks ...

I think a group buy for the first run will be in order, but let us wait for the prototypes first.

already had 5 mails from Zhang (yes Jeff, it is not Hu this time ;D ) regarding the card edge gold fingers.
it is always a mess, looks like there is no standard how to implement them in the gerbers ...

This is odd to me Volker. It always seems that Hu has a question or 2 on a new board...but never on the gold fingers. Of all of the different boards I have done will gold fingers, which is maybe 9 or 10 different Gerbers...never one question on gold fingers.

Strange. I will ask my friend what he is doing for this.

Best, Jeff

I have never had questions before gold-fingers.
only the usual reorder questions:
Quote
1. You ordered white soldermask and black silkscreen last time, and you order the green soldermask and white silkscreen this time, is it right?
2.You ordered the HASL in surface finish last time, and you order the Lead Free HASL - RoHS this time, is it right?

however, they did the GDIY51CEA PCB right, and I referenced Zhang (I hope Hu is only on holidays) to it.

Volker, I just verified with my friend Jim. He converts my dxf files into Gerbers for me. Large rectangular solder pads are created in whatever copper layer (top or bottom). I then specify how many gold fingers when inputting order. That is it. No other special layer or notations anywhere. No questions from them ever. Weird. Maybe they don't like you??  ;D :D :o

thanks. in Target I have layers for "gold top / gold bottom".
used them at the GDIY51CEA PCBs, with no luck.
this time I just ignored gold layers.
honestly I forgot to remove the solderstop layer this time  ::)
what I like is they double check if there is any question!
yes, they might not like me, since I order too much ;D ;D ;D

Hi Volker,

I had quoted Burns for a project before and they were kind of crazy expensive and long lead times, like you mentioned.
Omeg seems to be a lot more reasonable.
Give them a try.

great looking project.

mhm, I know them from the LAZ MPA.
the quote I got isn't too bad, I'm fine paying around EUR 8,- for a high quality potentiometer with a good feel.
good thing in the AOC51X is: both pots are the same value

btw, I'm awaiting the prototype PCBs next week.
need to check my parts stock over the weekend and order what I need to do the prototype as fast as possible :D

Very nice looking work Volker. Clean and straight forward. I can't wait to build a pair!  ;D

I need to relax too but not as much as you do.  ;)

while all my PCBs have been double sided yet it was the first time I needed to use vias.
I remembered that you had mentioned this. I have been looking at a 550b and I could not even count the number of vias used. Let's just say a lot! I can however count the number of resistor networks.  ???

might be a personal problem, but a lot of vias always look like autorouted to me.
I don't like autorouters :o

Jeff, stupid as it is, I think I really have to contact the Bourns suppliers you gave me in the US.
the EU distributors are - mhm - not willing to sell anything to me ::)

the Piher pots I have now for testing just have a bad feel - another personal problem I think ;D

Why won't they sell to you? WTF? Do they not want any business? Well, if that's what you are gonna do...hurry. You are looking at a 12 week lead time with Bourns.  ???

Man. So, I will have to wait 12 weeks or more to build these?  :'(
Title: Re: Preview: AOC51X

will forward you the email (the only response from 4 distributors I asked).
looked promising first, i had to sign a paper (what I did), and one week after I have had a letter from creditreform (http://www.creditreform.de/English/Creditreform/index.jsp). they want to know how many houses I own etc ;D ;D ;D
(I would have to pay upfront either, which I would do - why do you need Creditreform for this ???)
even asked my previously employer, since I know they used Creditreform.
the answer was: toss the paper

if they don't want my business I will import from the US.
I just want good quality and good feeling potentiometers :o
Title: Re: Preview: AOC51X

what about one of these from mouser?

51AAD-B28-D15L 10k log
51AAA-B28-D18L 50k log

the difference in most circuits between 50k log and 100k log is not huge.  not sure about your application.

if you can make one of these work it would save you the trouble of doing an order yourself.  it would also be easier to organize multiple group buys through mouser.

in my experience using bourns parts, the product is good, but the customer service is so-so.  i've met with their reps and they've come to the purple shop to sell andrew on using more of their stuff.  that 10-12 week lead time can easily turn into 16 weeks or they can show up a week early with no notice.  stock parts and repeat orders generally go smoother.

have gone back to this today ;D

with some changes we now have a
- max input of +18dBu @ 16V / +24 dBu @ 24V (1kHz below 1% THD)
- max output of +21.5dBu @ 16V / +25.5dBu @ 24V (1kHz below 1% THD)
just what I like ;D

went over my test tone signal tests today, and used real signals. what should I say:
with some minor changes in the sidechain, I'm very happy with it - from drumloops, bass, vocals up to summing signals ;D ;D ;D

I'm in love right now ;)

will do a rev02 PCB layout over the weekend.

Danke analag :)

at the moment I'm very pissed off with this project.
received the rev02 proto PCBs yesterday, they look good, will populate them with parts today.

the same time I remembered my order of the Bourns potentiometers beginning of august ...
10 weeks lead time, haven't heard about it for about 12 weeks.
phoned the german distributor ...
he told me the company didn't order the parts.
he wanted to visit me today at 10 am to explain ...
I even cleaned my workbench for this visit :o ::)
(it is the same company dealing with Grayhill, Alps and other interesting parts in europe)

at 10 am I got an email, he forgot an internal meeting ???
and that I have to order at least 500 pieces.
12 weeks behind after I placed my order :o :o :o
and for twice the price my friend Jeff told me for a 250 pieces order in the US :o :o ::)

ok, I will send a "please help me" mail to our friend Jeff,
but he won't be able to change Bourns lead-time of 10 weeks ...

heck, I want those Bourns 8)
and due to metalwork (L-Brackets / Frontpanels) you need the right parts.
if anybody wants PCBs only contact me :D

rant over, see you next year >:(

I may have a couple suppliers that have them in stock, PM me the part number and i can find out.

Electronic part lead times are really bad sometimes, I saw a part I needed on mouser the other day with a lead time of 51 weeks...I called to ask, and yeah, it's 51 weeks :o

No I can't change the lead-time. I can say my supplier is awesome. When she tells me something, she does it.

Give me the word and we will get this going for you Volker.

I am anxious for a pair of these myself so let's not prolong this any more.

Ordering custom parts can usually suck. I feel your pain my friend.

Best, Jeff

while my daughter is working on the 2nd prototype  ;D ;D ;D
I will give you a little update (do you think this will work ??? ??? ???)

Holger, how do you like rev02 (I'm sure yours looks better) ;D

received some expensive but good german iron for this project yesterday:

since I have said goodbye to my Bourns potentiometer I have to rethink something.
while the Bourns 51 with metal bracket would have hold nicely the control PCB to the front, I doubt two standard 3pin potentiometers will do this in a safe way.
I will either enlarge the control PCB to add two screw holes (which makes the separation senseless),
or I will do a brand new rev03 PCB with no separated control PCB.
still leaves the potentiometer brand open, but we need to decide it before manufacturing L-Brackets and fronts.

btw, I'm in contact with our friend Dan (ddt (http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=35422.0)) for L-Brackets, and may be front panels.

in the meantime I will build and test a rev02 PCB with the Pikatrons :)

somebody has to do the work while I still can't use my hand ;D ;D ;D
the main problem is she loves shorts :D :D :D
if the Fluke doesn't "beeeeeep" on each solder joint she thinks it is broken ...
well, this version sounds clean ;D

Good; since I had to recycle some of the Rev.1 components I doubt that my PCB currently looks much
better than your daughter's PCB  ;)

If the pots of choice (Burns) aren't available, its maybe better to skip the control/main boards idea and put all components on one board.

I still need some time to evaluate the limiter in my studio, but from my first impression it sounds beefy (no wonder since there is some
iron involved).

Volker, found my meter bug, the 072 was burned and led to the freaking meter in O/P mode.

a very smart US based audio manufacture offered me to help out with the bourns potentiometers!
(no new PCB design needed).

release date will be Q1 2011.
due to the (hard to get) bourns and pikatron parts supply might be limited to a maximum of 50 pieces, we will see.

Hi Volker and Holger,
I'm curious to know how the AOC51X sounds compared to DAOC? I'd like to try the tube version but practically the 51x cards would fit better in my rack setup.

Andrew, except of using the same vactrol they don't share much together.
(hard knee) limiter versus (soft knee) compressor
transistors / ICs versus tubes only

a little update on the OLA51X:
I have had some inrush current problems, which is solved.
while all is working fine up to 24dBu output in 600R, we are not 100% satisfied with the low level performance yet.

Volker already answered that. I haven't been in my studio for a month (broke my leg), I didn't even fire up my soldering iron.
I hope I can jump on the project again soon.

I hope you don't mind bringing this thread up again.

But, any news on this?

will go "in me" with this.
as far as I know Holger is happy with his proto tests.
my last measuring have been some weeks ago.
I might have done measuring errors there :o

next time I find time I will take the time for this project again ;D
too much to to do at work at the moment.

I had some time today to do some tests. It's a hard knee limiter, as mentioned before. Maybe this example is of use for you.
First of all, an unprocessed (http://audiofor.tv/diy/51xAOL/original.wav) test file.
Here is the processed (http://audiofor.tv/diy/51xAOL/processed.wav) one, settings at some 5-7 dB GR.
Both files are normalized to -3dBFS for better comparability.

I really like the green panel too.  :o

To put my €0.02 in:
I would prefer round pushbuttons over rectangular ones.

yes - but I need to do a new PCB design, adding a 470uF bipolar before the output transformer >:(
otherwise inrush current is too high, and / or the Pikatron output smokes the DOA ::)
don't expect this released this year, but I want to have it ready as soon as possible.

That happened exactly today with Hogers AOC which he lent me for testing. The output tranny was >60deg when I realized what happened, I couldn´t even touch it. Maybe you put a 47Ohm resistor parallel to the 470uF (API stylee).

which DOA inside?
if it is analags "Hybrid" I will send you some replacement PCBs.

Yes, it´s the Hybrid DOA. Could you send me the schematics with the board? Since it´s Holgers thingy I have no documentation.
After the the big smoke I was wondering where the BW limiting cap of the hybrid DOA is and why there´s nothing done to isolate capacitive load. The datasheat clearly says that there´s danger of oscillation at lower gain and offers several circuits for prevention.

you are not on facebook, aren't you  :o
neither on the german forum.

the K13117 (http://www.nrgrecording.de/nrg/viewtopic.php?t=2364) is a pure class A mic pre designed by Darius Kubarth (Kubi)
no teaser here since I don't know if he wants to.

the PMV70X is the Neumann PMV70X PreAmp in 51X form factor.
no teaser since I need to sell some OV560 first to fund the project.

looking at the dates from this project, and the 5 years the Jensamp took, I do not tease anymore.
will report back once anything is finished and ready to go.
