Title: Pultec 500 - Analog Allstars EQP-1S5 -- VPR APPROVED -- **2nd Unit Ships FREE**
Post by: mitsos on December 12, 2011, 08:09:01 AM
EQP-1S5   500 series Pultec EQP-1A/EQP-1A3

Faithful reproduction of the 1970's solid state Pultec EQP-1A3!

***NOW AVAILABLE***

***SECOND UNIT SHIPS FREE***

(to make up for USPS ever increasing rates)

VPR-certified complete units handmade in the USA
or
DIY kits

Complete units are hand-built with great attention to detail, and come with our own hand-build, discrete, through-hole (no SMD) 2520 opamps.

New revision pics below!
Some notable changes:

1. Full metal enclosure
2. Standoffs pressed into the bottom sled (no more screwing in standoffs from under the sled)
3. Inductor and transformers now have molex connectors so no need to solder wires to the board
4. Added pads for a DC-blocking capacitor in the gain stage, to allow use of high DC offset opamps like the JLM99V (untested)

All in all, these new units are even easier to assemble than before!

FULL METAL JACKET, BABY!!

ASSEMBLED Units: Carefully HANDBUILT and TESTED come with a replica 1970's “Huntington” era 2520 discrete operational amplifier, and are VPR Approved by API for use in API lunchboxes and 10 space racks, as well as API consoles that accept 500 format modules, for example 1608).   Of course, they will also work in all compatible racks from other manufacturers.

DIY Kit contents: Comes with *almost* all parts needed including a toroidal Permalloy inductor just like the original, TWO custom-wound nickel transformers closely modeled on the HS56 (the solid state units used one on input, one on output), Grayhill switches, all Wima polypropylene caps (some of the best sounding caps in our opinion), relays, everything.

The only part not included in the DIY kits is our discrete operational amplifier.  We would love to offer this but due to build complexity we will not offer them for DIY (at least, for now). We may end up offering them for sale as built units, we'll see.

For some reason I am not turning any results on a search for the EQP-1S5. Do you mind linking me?

The only place for info on the EQP-1S5:

 ;D

Seriously, there was never an EQP-1S5 (not that I know of anyway, but watch someone post a picture now).  There were "S" versions of the EQP-1A (like the EQP-1S3 in the link below), which may have been special order units or special batches, I don't know for sure, but they seem to not be 100% consistent in frequencies between different "S" units.  Most have more high boost frequencies and some but not all have more low frequencies as well. Not sure what that means?  In those days everything was hand built/wired so making custom units was probably not as big a deal as it is today when you have to redesign the  board and reprogram all the robots building it.   Check the GS link below for a post from Steve Jackson who I believe is remaking the old pultecs, and for a pic of a famous pair of EQP-1S3's in use (note the frequencies are different from the ones Steve Jackson posted).

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/175904-chris-lord-alges-bus-pultecs-2.html

My circuit itself is like the solid state EQP1A, but with a lot more frequencies so "S" seemed a more appropriate designation, and, of course the 5 because it's in 500 format.

I'm glad you finally pulled it off. What about front panaling? Anything included?
Thanks, it's been a lot of work (not done yet!). Front panel will be anodized and either engraved or silked. Everything is included except the discrete opamp (but will come with the 5534->DOA adapter.

I'm in so I hope you got my email...
Yes, I did, thanks Myles. Niels is doing invoicing as we speak, but he's been pulling 18 hour work days getting a big Neve into a studio since last week!

I'm probably in, depending on what my next pay check looks like. I could only assume that this circuit sounds amazing. Wima caps, pultec circuit, military grade metal resistors, 2520 gain stage.. If I think about this any more I'll end up pulling out my credit card.

Hi Jeff,

Sorry, I should have said "most" invoices have gone out. Basically all the ones we didn't have to recalculate.  We needed to "discount" your pair for the grayhills you sent us for the prototype, that's all.  Well, that and the fact that I'm working in the northeast of Brasil for the next few days and Niels is finishing up that Neve install and sending invoices at 2am!

Thanks again for the sending those grayhills, they really helped!

Most others should have received their invoices already, and everyone else should be getting theirs any minute!

Thanks!

Thank you and everyone else who's part of this thing, I'm very excited to see this finally materializing!

Also, EVERYONE, please check the first post, I've thrown up a list with names/invoices/paid, if there are two Y's next to your name, you're good to go. If not, then check your email/spam folder/etc for the invoice, let me know if you did not get it, and I'll figure out how to resend it.

many thanks!

got it, and updated you to green!

Please everyone with open invoices, check your spam folders.

So far paypal has been fairly smooth (we had to send them a BUNCH of paperwork of course) but there's nothing like a Spam folder to sabotage everything!

Thanks, and happy holidays to all!

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I really wanted to have something concrete to tell you guys when I wrote.    Some things have arrived, the iron is in the works, but the pots and switches are backed up a bit.   I won't tell you the original delivery date for those because you'll have a heart attack, I was waiting for confirmation on a new date, and found out yesterday that the pots will arrive third week of Feb, and I was told I'd have a sure answer from GH by Thursday.  I do expect the switches a bit sooner, now as long as everyone else keeps to the dates promised, we should be shipping mid-end of February.

Tomorrow, Niels is going to the metal house to check out a proto faceplate / bracket they made, to ensure fit. The whole run only takes a day or two for them to make so it's well on time.

What else? The trafo design took a lot longer than expected to finalize, that's another thing.. We made some changes (for the better of course!).  We decided that instead of offering them as 150,600:150,600 they'll be 600 only on the primary (everything still wound as normal, just all the extra windings/taps are not pulled out cuz they won't be used anyway), and 250,600 on the secondary, since, on the original pultec the output HS56 was run backwards as 250:600, or about 1:1.55 ratio.  All this means that we're able to keep the trafo wiring original with 2 less wires to solder, so I'm happy!

More news to come soon. Thanks for your patience everyone!

Hey guys, I said I'd have some more news, took a bit longer to respond, but I'm happy to say the inductors should be finished very soon and I think people will be happy. They seem to be very consistent between individual coils, part of that is the matched cores, the other part is the tweaking we've been doing to the winding (I've been emailing back and forth with the winder at least 10 times a day since last week). Can't wait to get my hands on these!

The metal prototype sled fit perfectly, we're hoping to have news on anodizing soon.

Trafos... since we have time before the pots and switches arrive, we decided to make one last prototype pair using just the taps mentioned above, to ensure they are perfect.  they should be arriving this week, and as soon as they're tested I'll let you guys know the results....

thanks everyone!

Time for an update I guess!  We had some setbacks with the final trafo prototypes (ran out of bobbins) which put us back a week. We did get the final inductor production samples in the meantime (so far they are within +/-3%, I had hoped for +/-2% but still very good). We are waiting on the final trafo prototypes (in the mail already) so we can do a final test on everything on the final PCB just to make absolutely sure everything is OK.

The color scheme, has changed. There will be no more blue but I'm sure most will not be sad about that! Basically, we were afraid of getting a wrong color clue, so in the end, we decided to stick to the original color scheme, that is silver face and black knobs/legending.  The knobs will be the same, just black with white line, the face is brushed and clear anodized. Sled and trafo holders are done, faceplates are anodized and in the process of getting legending done.  As soon as they're in I can post some pics for you to see! The anodizing came out really nice.

@monoklang and anyone else interested, there are a limited number of leftovers (we had to buy extras to meet minimums).  For anyone placing an order and making payment before these ship, (in other words, "pre-buy") the price will be the same.  But due to the fact that this thing has become quite a bit more expensive than we originally calculated, any left over units after shipping has started will be sold at a higher price.

Thank you to everyone who has taken part so far!

We're waiting for pots and switches any day now.  Tried to get a shipping update from them, but no response.. must be carnaval or something.   8)

Knobs are in, they look very nice. Caps are in, metal is mostly in (waiting on faceplates to get legended, so far the brushed/anodized looks really nice).   The last inductor testing, Niels said the frequencies were spot on which is always good!

So much for good news, now the bad.  Paypal gave us a real hassle the past month. The froze and unfroze our account 3 times, each time Niels had to send them a bunch of new paperwork, they wanted proof that we bought parts, that we had delivered orderes (that one was silly, we had explained from day one the nature of the payments, so they knew everything was "made to order").  In the end, all this did was delay everything, in that we had to keep talking to them, finding more "proof" instead of actually working on this stuff, calling manufacturers for updated shipping dates, things like that.  The only good part is that we had taken the money out of paypal otherwise it would be stuck there and we'd have no way of paying for the parts!  A soap opera.

Supposedly they removed the hold on our account just a few minutes ago, but I am not holding my breath, they did that before and then I got an email an hour later that they changed their mind.. So I'll cross my fingers and hopefully this won't happen again cuz we still need to get monoklang's invoice out :)

Thanks for bearing with us, I hope to have more good news this week!

more good news/bad news I'm afraid... which first? good news I guess, to put you in a good mood before I smack you with the bad..  We got a bunch of pots in the mail yesterday.  I mean lots. Way more than we need, but we had to meet minimums for each of them.

Bad news is that, while I was asking GH for a copy of the invoice they never sent (they charged us way back when we made the order),  I also took the opportunity to ask for an updated shipping time.  The lady told me that they had some kind of part source problem and that the new ship date would be 3/22... Not cool at all, but iron is still not in either so, I guess not the only thing holding this up, but I thought I should let you guys know.

To leave you with a good feeling, so I don't get lynched(!), here is a side pic of the final prototype we did a little while back, you can see it now with the cool metal brackets holding the trafos and, of course, the black knobs. I think the black tape looks great underneath the trafos, but I don't think the final ones will come with it, they'll just be one big shiny block of nickel!

Sorry for the delays everyone, thanks for hanging in there (and not hanging me out to dry!).

Hi guys, sorry for all the delays, I have one more week of badness for you all... Just got an email from GH pushing me back from 3/22 to 3/30... They told me the shorting part of the switch came in wrong from their supplier and that they would overnight the switches at their expense...  I'm very sorry to keep giving you bad news, but at least it's not that much worse.

Now to divert your attention a bit, here is a pair on ebay right now:

I don't think Mitsos has received the Grayhill switches yet. Grayhill had a problem with the shorting portion of the 71 series switches. I just spoke with my sales rep last week to order some 56 series switches. She said they are expediting all the open 71 series orders and said it was a complete nightmare. All we can do is patiently wait right now.

Hi everyone, sorry for the delay in responding, I was in India for the past couple weeks and had no internet the last few days. The switches did come in (finally!) and, as Jeff and I previously posted, grayhill had a problem with one of their suppliers so there was a huge delay in all 71 series switches.  But, now Niels has everything packed up mostly, we'll be checking things over again and hope to start shipping mid-late next week.

Thank you all again for your patience, I'm sure you'll agree it was worth it!

I am happy to say we are beginning to ship the units in the order that payments came in.  Niels has built a few by now and we have come to an efficient order of doing things, so I will finish the build instructions and post them hopefully by Friday.  Overall build time is about 2.5 hours, but YMMV since Niels  can probably build them quicker than someone seeing the PCBs for the first time.  That said, if you get your package before I post instructions, please don't start building as there is an order it has to be done, otherwise you may have to undo/unsolder things!

Thanks again everyone, looking forward to hearing everyone's impressions!

Niels is about halfway on the shipments from the looks of it and I am about halfway done with the instructions over here.  I think I'll have time between today and tomorrow to finish this up, since the US based guys will start getting theirs very soon and I don't want anyone starting this without reading through that.  I will make a PDF and post it in the help thread I "started" in the EQ subforum.

Very glad that parts are arriving so fast.  I've had to revise the ïnstructions, it's really all very simple just the first steps must be done in order and exactly to instruction. I've tried to write all that as clearly as possible, Niels has taken some closeup pics to show the little details and as of last night I think it's done, just waiting on Niels to have a read-through and confirm.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say, I made a deal with the men in black so they would let the stuff through!!  8)

It's either random selection and you got lucky, or since it's a small package they just let it through.

have fun soldering!

A bit of good news for some of you. When we first calculated shipping charges, we based them on shipping 1 kit per box, but we were actually able to fit 2 kits per box. So even though shipping charges went up a bit (about $3 per small international box) we actually saved some money on shipping so those of you who ordered 2 kits should see a refund in your paypal account in the next few days.  Sort of an early Christmas bonus!

Thanks again to everyone who pre-ordered, please keep us posted on arrivals and finished builds!

mroe good news!

There are pics in the build manual (I'm updating it atm also), although no closeups of those specific parts. For the trafos, as long as you put the screws/standoffs in place in the order described they will go together just fine. You may choose to leave the fiber washers out, or may need to add a bit of doublesided tape in case of any movement. As for putting the PCBs together, first solder the headers to the bottom PCB, and when you put the two pcbs together you will need to adjust them by bending ever so slightly prior to soldering to the top pcb.

Finally managed to get my pair of kits cleared by UK customs...  They look great and I can't wait to get started!

One slight issue is that I would appear to be missing the rather nice custom knobs for one of the units, as only eight have been supplied for the two kits.  Would it be possible to obtain the further eight for the other unit?  Everything else seems present and correct of first inspection.

Once again, many thanks for what appears to be a great project!

Best Wishes

Justin

Hi, thanks, please send an email with order info (name, address, paypal email address, forum name, and number of units) to
EQP1S5_preorder [at] analogallstars [dot] com    (fix address format first of course).  We will calculate shipping and send you a paypal invoice. You can pay the invoice via paypal or credit card.

As for liking them, I'm anxious to hear back from all the slackers who haven't built theirs yet! :)   FWIW, I love mine, (though I may be suspect, as it's my baby) but so does the studio I lent one to, so much that I don't know if I'll get it back... (and they're asking for another one).

Niels and I have been pretty busy getting these kits out while also working on making them available continuously in kit as well as complete form(!!) (with a replica "huntington" 2520, to stay as true to the original as possible).  We will offer the complete units at a discount to members here.  I will update the first post over the next couple of days with more info.

Besides Niels and I, and the members who have posted here and in the help thread, we've had them in the hands of some very well respected producers/engineers and I'm very happy to say they've all been thrilled.  100% of them.   Many are using them in place of their original valve pultecs when they want something that will take a harder signal, or want the more controlled bass and transients of the solid state amp (there is a reason API's are widely used on drums), while still retaining the sweet non-brittle highs that only permalloy inductors and high quality capacitors can produce.

Not that I can take credit, I suppose credit should go to western electric or someone from back then.  What Niels and I do take credit for is the hundreds of hours of research, reverse engineering and prototyping inductors and transformers to be able to make them the same way as they used to.

I hope that gives you an idea of how much I love this thing.  If you do decide to place an order, keep in mind that we are running a bit low on stock atm as we've had orders coming in for complete units eating up kit stock, once we run out I'll update the first post. But for now they are available and parts have been ordered for the next batch.

Thanks again to everyone who took part of the first batch, it's been a lot of work, but I'm very happy with the results!

cheers!

Hi guys,

Been needing to update a bit here. Thanks for the patience, Niels and I think it will be worth it. We had a couple of delays due to wanting to make improvements to the layout (molexes on the iron to make assembly easier, for example) and another delay with grayhill, but everything is underway.  We are also doing a few extra touches on the metalwork we feel will make the kit all that much nicer.  Should be available in October at the rate things are going.   I will update with concrete dates soon.

thanks!

Strange, I thought I had replied to atticmike's post.. My connection must have timed out or something.  Mike, yes, the kit includes everything to build the EQ, minus the discrete opamp (virtually any will work, as long as they have low DC offset).  There are quite a few options on (and off) the forum for opamps, and the kit does come with a little 1x1" PCB to adapt a 5534 to a 2520 footprint (5534 and resistors/caps for the adapter not included, but it's 10 or so commonly available parts).

The originals used API 2520s for makeup gain, and for that, our built/tested units come with a replica of the famous 1970's version of this opamp.

thanks! They look nice, huh?  As for availability, I was supposed to have news on the inductors last week, if that gives you an idea.  That and faceplates are holding things up, but hopefully won't be too far out! And don't worry, when they're here, you'll be the first to know!   :D

Haven't fired up my pair from the first order, so what's up with the added metal case?
Will I need it? Can it be added to our first batch units?

that's a $50 fine right there!

Quote

The full case was done after using the EQ in rightmost slot of the 6-slot API lunchbox (right next to PSU). We had a little induced hum from the power toroid.  Now we only tested one of these API racks, so we don't know if other ones are the same. In racks with external PSUs this is not an issue, but nevertheless we thought it was best to install it.  So, no, you shouldn't need it, as long as you don't put it next to EMF emitting toroids! :)

To answer your question about fitting old kits, that's an old kit in the picture.

Hi Everyone! Sorry to disappear, I've been without "real" internet for a couple of weeks, and very busy with the other job... We've got everything in except the metalwork, that is holding us up a bit, so it looks like January for the new kits.  I'm sorry for everyone who's been patiently waiting, but I do have a solution for 2-3 of you, maybe.

We have enough parts for 3 of the "old" kits (no full metal jacket and no Molexes on the iron, but that's not 100% necessary anyway).  We've been holding these for previous sales that never materialized...

Kante, since you have been waiting the longest, you'll have first dibs, after you it's first paid first served.

The three kits will be at the normal price of $450 USD + shipping/PP.   New kits will be just a bit more due to extra charges involving the metalwork and Molexes vs the original version.

Once again, sorry to keep you all waiting, believe me though, I'm in the same boat as I sold my pair of EQs to a friend who needed them, thinking the next gen would be here by now!    :'(

For those interested in the EQs, please send me a PM  (BTW: I emptied my PM box, it was 104% full!) and I will contact everyone in the order the PMs come in.

cheers and thanks again for your patience...

well, if the world doesn't end we have some EQing to do!  Let me know how it goes, I have been meaning to update/improve the build docs due to some feedback from others who have built it.  The major thing I would recommend is to build and test the amp board by itself first, it requires one jumper at the top header and one at the bottom. I will email you an image to make it easy, but I thought I'd mention it here as well.  Good luck with customs, I hope they are feeling nice due to the holidays!

cheers!

Hi guys,
here is an image of how to set up the amp PCB for standalone (without the filter PCB connected) testing. I hope this helps during initial testing and/or troubleshooting.  As time allows, I will incorporate it into the build document.

To test the I/O/amplifier PCB, populate it and separate it from the filter. Then you would need to set up jumpers between the pads connected by the red lines.  The top one connects the input trafo to the opamp, and the bottom jumper will turn on the bypass relays, to get the amp in the circuit.  (power off = bypass).  With these jumpers in place, you could install this in your rack and it will function like a line amp.

Gain should be a minimum of about 16-17dB, no max gain limit so don't go fully CW (if you install the trimmer like the silkscreen it will function like a gain knob, CCW decreases gain, CW increases gain).

In case anyone is stuck troubleshooting, dividing the circuit like this can be very helpful in finding what might otherwise seem like a "needle in the haystack."

Happy holidays to all, happy 2013 in a couple of days!

cheers!

Hi Everyone!  All ready to go!

Niels has finished running the first unit through testing, everything is working just fine and we are all ready to accept orders! We are working on updating the build procedure, as there are slight differences due to the pressed-in standoffs and molex connectors for the iron... everything is much easier this time around!

We'll get the build doc up in the next couple of days and will update the first post.

Thanks!

Hi mitsos, I'm poking around my eq's, the first thing I noticed was there was no ground reference on the opamp (the pin between V+ and V-) am I correct in assuming there should be continuity between that pin and contact #1 on the 15 pin card?
Thanks

Hello,

pin 1 is the chassis ground.
You should look after pins 5(audio gnd) and 13(psu gnd) as 0v reference.

Best,

Udo.

Hey mitsos - amazing project. This is what diy should be thank you. Now I'm new to all this really - how would this be for a first build? I thought I read somewhere that this was a difficult project except I can't see that - looks pretty simple to me?

Post by: mitsos on March 06, 2014, 04:01:14 PM
Thanks Dogma, it took a lot of time and prototyping to get it to where it's at.

I'd say this is about as easy as it gets for DIY. It's mainly a lot of caps to solder and you have to solder the pots/switches in order.  Niels did a really good job with the hardware on this latest version and it goes together very nicely.  It comes with everything you need except for an opamp, but you can use any 2520/1731/990. The IC adapter that classicapi sells should also work, and will be easier to build, of course.

For someone with experience it shouldn't take more than an afternoon to build the EQ (a friend and I built 6 in an afternoon!). As a first time project, I'd say take your time, ask questions, and build it slowly over a couple of days, so you can double check your work because troubleshooting anything usually takes longer (and is more frustrating!) than building it.  ;D

We also have a help thread in the EQ/filter subforum so we and others who have built them can help.

cheers!

That means it's built, calibrated, tested and, of course,  used.  8)  ;D ;D
I have to say I'm very pleased with the result indeed. I was putting a few different things through it Saturday and it really fit in well with anything I put through it. Didn't seem like I could make anything sound "bad" through it no matter how radical the curves were that I was dialing in.

Obviously I'm kind of kicking myself a little for only ordering one, but as a bit of a DIY noob I wanted to be certain I wasn't biting off a little more than I could chew.  Couldn't have asked for a more pleasant build although there still that little disagreement between the PCB and the BOM regarding R1 and R3 but I just went with the values on the PCB like you said in the help thread and that worked out just fine.
Looks to me as if multiple channels of these are going to stay on the priority list for a while! - now the hard part; I've got to figure out what to sell off to finance a few more !!!

The MEQ has been getting use at a studio for a while, little tweaks, etc.

Wow, this took me a while to answer, sorry greg!  The MEQ is coming along, in fact the current prototype is working fine. Just have to finalize parts orders, and we'll have news on it.  Mainly the delay is because I've been slowly moving house and have had very little time to play with the protos, but now that things are getting settled, we should be moving quite a bit faster!

I suppose somebody may have asked already, but do you sell just the transformers? Also, why is it so hard to find the solid state Pultec schematic? (I'm just looking for the amp section) If anybody can pm it to me, I'd love to have it.

Thanks!

Yeah, if you want to pre-order the transformers I'd take a few!

The MEQ is coming along, in fact the current prototype is working fine. Just have to finalize parts orders, and we'll have news on it.  Mainly the delay is because I've been slowly moving house and have had very little time to play with the protos, but now that things are getting settled, we should be moving quite a bit faster!
Any updates on the MEQ?

Is the EQP1S5 still available to buy? Tried emailing but it bounced back.

Just built my first  EQP-1S5 and wanted to share my experience with this kit.. Build and documentation were extremely straightforward - If you have DIY skills, I would consider this a one-day-project.

The parts quality, build quality of the materials, knobs, metal enclosure, etc are very nice and that is reflected in my experience with using it. These are really really good EQ's. So far I've been using it on synths, drum machines, samples etc. haven't had a chance to try it on vocals or any acoustic sources but have a feeling it will shine there too.

The Opamp I used was a kit built GAR2520. I had no problems with this. It worked well on install for me without adding the CF cap.

Going to at least build another one for a stereo pair, and another pair after that if budget/stock permits.

Just tried emailing address in original thread with an order, been a few minutes & it hasn't bounced back yet. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Hi,

I have two of these beautiful units but unfortunately two of the knobs have been lost. I’m having a nightmare trying to find replacements in the correct size. Do you have any suggestions of where to find similar sized knobs?

Many thanks,

Rich
