Title: [GROUP BUY] GIX-51X. Second (and likely the last) run. [[CLOSED]]
Post by: gemini86 on April 12, 2013, 10:52:01 PM

***UPDATE [5/5/2013]*** This group buy is now closed. there will be extras for late comers, but a very limited amount. If you are interested in kits, please email [email protected] BEFORE sending any payment.

I started a new thread to detach from the clutter and confusion that is the first group buy thread.

Once we beat around 20-25 kits, we can count of the prices as they follow:

PCB set - 18 USD
Laser cut aluminum (aluminium, for the un-american) L-bracket - 10 USD
Faceplate, same as the last one. - 10 USD

Since I greatly underestimated packaging and shipping costs, as well as how many international buyers I would be dealing with, I took a huge hit on shipping costs, so I will be charge actual shipping via USPS, which is the cheapest option available. This will be calculated at the time of shipping.

Average shipping for 2 kits (may be more or less than):
Europe/UK - 13.41 USD
Canada - 8.24
USA - 6.51 (priority mail)

Ordering and Payment Procedure: Add up your sub-total and send payment via paypal to [email protected] Please list what you want and quantities in the notes box, and make sure your shipping address is correct Once everything is ready to ship, I will contact each of you for payment on shipping.

Pictures of the build can be seen here (http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=51020.0)

The original group buy thread contains PDF files for the brave of us who would like to try home etching their own pcbs. Not a task I would recommend for a beginner.

So, please state your interest here for full kits, pcbs only or whatever you may want. I'd like to get this all ordered and ready to be sent out to everyone within a months time, so order now! EMAIL ME: [email protected]

1 full kit please...

By the way did you finally get a chance to consolidate the BOM on the build page to reflect all the revisions and clear up any other concerns or questions?

Okay just to give this a timeline, orders will be accepted through next week and I will close this group buy on the 5th of May. I will then place the orders and should have parts in hand before the end of May.

So, if anyone else wants to get in on this, now is the time. Just like run #1, I will be ordering extras for those who don't have the $$$ right now or are late to the party, but only a small amount, so don't think they'll be available for too long.

Hey Rodney how soon can you ship these kits out. I want to place my order tonight but I will be moving in 2 weeks. I need to know what address to give you. the one in paypal will be wrong 2 weeks from now and I don't need any mail delays or problems. But If you can ship soon then I can use my current address.

Thanks

The project is on my to-do-list,
but then, I have to build a rack first.
Maybe I should just aim for the 2U-version..

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask this question but hopefully someone will be willing to explain it to me or point me to the right thread...

why do so many people buy 2 preamp kits or pairs when they build. I am asking from the perspective of someone who records vocals in mono?

Thanks in advance

Personally I build in pairs because for me, it's quicker to build 2 at the same time.   Plus my racks are full of pairs of things so I can route stereo groups through them during mixing etc

Lots of people also like to use these on a mixbus, which is usually stereo.

Hi!
Two units are very useful for drum overheads, for stereo-miking-techniques, stereo-DI-sources (keys)... some of us still record bands  8)

An old Bruce Swedien trick is to record vocals in stereo. That could be one reason. Or do dual mono for mic shootouts, or one close mic, one far mic to capture a great room. All kinds of reasons for a single vocal source to have 2 pres.

Just an update, PCBs will ship on the 22nd. A couple days behind schedule, as they had to redo a bunch of the faceplates due to blemishes. At least I know they care. (I told them I would straight up reject them if there were any cosmetic issues before they even gave me the quote.)

Brackets should be shipping soon after.

recieved my package yesterday...everything was there. I will add though i feel this project needs an updated sleeker looking faceplate. I was skeptical at first but looking at them in person confirmed my skepticism. I am grateful for the project but when lined up against the other pres i have this one doesnt give off the "ooohhh awwwe" look...I wish i knew how to use that software...

havent built this pre yet but im sure it sounds amazing...pcbs and metal work look really good

I know what you mean about the faceplate. It's not a commercial product, and I don't have the resources to make multiple prototype faceplates. So, that's just the nature of the open source beast. If I were to spend the time and money to design and prototype a super sleek modern faceplate, I definitely wouldn't price it at ten bucks. Maybe we could hit up Dan at collective cases for something special?

I agree on hitting up someone who designs faceplates, something I sort of wanted to do from the start. But in any case I actually like Bruce0's knob choice. I bought the same knobs and I think a cleaner/modern looking design is all that is needed. Do you have Dan's contact info? I wouldn't mind contacting him about the issue since i'll be asking him to make me some faceplates for my ssl 9k5 and 4k5 pre's soon.

I can only imagine what they look like side by side...If you can post a pic.

I think my issue is Jeff spoiled me with his API pre's they aren't commercial (although they could be) but they just look really good. My NV73's from the Don Classics looks vintage but modern, and my SSL 9k5 and 4k5's look retro as well. Then there's my hairball Lola's that have a unique look as well.

I think this one should keep the vintage look now that I think about it, but I wanna spice up a few things  ;)
