Hi Cemal

do these Micpre kits need matching to be used as stereo pairs?

thanks Ian

Hi Ian,

Although I already replied by e-mail I'll record here again.

You are probably meaning by component matching and the simple answer to it is no.

In terms of level matching the gain switches will track well as the resistors are 1%.  Then you trim with the faders to the meters.

Hello all,

yesterday I had the opportunity to have my MicPre Ones on a recording session at my work.
We're doing a CD for our musical master class atm and started recording all of the music.

Lots of it consists of adaptions on Henry Purcell's tunes. In this case I took them for piano.

We only had a Yamaha baby grand available that sounds quite a bit "muddy" compared to others in our house.
I used a matched Schoeps pair (CMC6 with cardioid capsule). After setting them up in small A/B technique I didn't get enough attack and open sound-because of the piano itself of course. So I altered the mics to X/Y and placed them closer I'd say 50cm behind/over the hammers close to the open lid.

Bamm!Brilliance came back nearly as I wanted as well as some attack sounds.
I had the mics split into another pair of excellent preamps as well.
Today I made a rough mix in the studio and must say that in nearly all recordings the MicPre Ones made the piano sit in the mix better than the other amps. There was also enough "meat" to do a slight wide boost in the area around 10kHz ("ping" of the hammers and "clarity").
Very very nice indeed!
It never sounded clinical or cold but wide open, dynamic, fast responding and created lots of depth.
I would highly recommend these preamps for nearly any kind of accoustic instruments in both modern pop as classic recordings.
Also they seem to be very cool on ambient stuff or room miking.
In a few weeks I will have a wonderful female singer for one of those recordings (pop adaption on "music for a while").
I'll give it a try and use them on her vocals then! Also on a counter tenor voice soon, who knows!

Really great tools, versatile with tons of possibilities (Hi-Z input, cool monitor and split features, hpf, switchable impedance etc.).

Get them when you can, they're hot!!!

Best regards and happy recording,

Udo.

nice one Udo.  :)
i've been using the mic pre one a lot on ribbin mic recordings for my woodwinds to great effect, lots of clean gain. sounding great on acoustic guitar also.
how are things progressing with the CMRR/SYMMETRY trimming kit Sahib? it'll be autumn soon and i'll be switching my soldering iron on again  ;)

Ian

Hi Ian,

The boards have just arrived, The picture of the finished prototype is attached. I am literally in the process of revising the BOM and working out the kit price.

It interfaces with the free version of TrueRTA  https://www.trueaudio.com/rta_down.htm

It can also be used manually with an external signal generator and AC milivoltmeter.

I'll give it a try and use them on her vocals then! Also on a counter tenor voice soon, who knows!
Update:

Two days ago I recorded the before mentioned counter tenor.
We did "come again"(J.Dowland) and "the dark is my delight" as adaptions.
Setup was U87Ai to MicPre One directly into PT via RME FF800 (line in).
Mic distance was about 1m,slightly sideways to give the singer a chance to move a bit,he does huge gestures while singing for concentration and "body tension"(I hope the words are right,I'm german,sorry...).

MicPre One transports all of this!
Again wide open sounding, his voice seemed to fly.
I missed really nothing, even thought I "see" him with my ears and felt the smallest changes in his mood.
Can't explain it better.
My favourite preamps for this kind of music and instruments now (...and I have lots to choose from).

Excellent.

Hi Ian,

Card is ready.  I am preparing to launch a number of kits this week including this one. So I am a bit snowed under with preparing the documentation but I can send you one with the Black front panel/knobs.

However, here is the introductory info.

"
The card is for carrying out tests using an unbalanced source and measuring instrument.

The signal source may be from a generator or computer. A sine wave signal is recommended.

The measuring instrument could be a DVM, level meter, oscilloscope or computer.

If a computer is to be used it is recommended to use software from True Audio or similar.

http://www.trueaudio.com/rta_abt1.htm - the free version is sufficient to carry out the tests.

If a DVM is to be used it must be capable of measuring high frequency low level signals in order to carry out Symmetry and CMRR adjustments.

The inputs and outputs of the module under test remain connected to the rear connectors when the jig is inserted in the extender led. It is highly recommended that all connections are disconnected from the rack that relate to the module position under test. This includes multiway connections. This will eliminate the effects of loading by cable or external equipment.

There are special cases where these connections may be made and these are discussed later in the text.
The jig places a load of 600 ohms on the module output. This the normal load applied when testing professional audio equipment because it can create worst case output swing and THD conditions.

PHONO connectors are provided for connection to test equipment and/or computer. These are unbalanced connections and the two INPUT sockets are wired in parallel as are the OUTPUT sockets.

Top sockets are for the connection of a signal generator.

Bottom sockets are to the measuring equipment – DVM/oscilloscope/computer.

Additionally test points are provided for each of these lines.

A balanced standard jack plug allows for a balanced feed to be produced from the unbalanced PHONO input. This feeds the PHASE and CMRR test circuitry which is situated before the jack output and can therefore be used to test other equipment or systems.

Similarly, a balanced standard jack plug allows for an external balanced feed to be connected to the measuring equipment. "

so the 1-slotted one looks like it actually is two slots wide, why not stereo in&outs then?
Title: Re: TAC 511 RACK / EQ ONE , MICPRE ONE, MICPRE THREE by Total Audio Control
Post by: sahib on February 25, 2015, 11:30:02 AM
The reason for that is to accommodate double width mono module  (such as EQ ONE) with external power supply or a single width module with an internal power supply.

In terms of the manufacturing cost there is not a significant difference between two slot and three slot, So, if you are needing two slots for a stereo module then get the three slot one and perhaps build the power supply into the thirds slot.  I am currently designing a power supply module specifically for this application.

I'm looking for a portable 3 or 6 ch rack. Would it be possible, to use the 51x Floor Box PSU Bundle (Two DC Cable) (which I already own)  to power this one up ?

1U RACK MOUNT POWER SUPPLY KIT

Can power two 11 slot racks (22 modules).

AC INPUT: 115/230V
DC OUTPUT 1:  + - 16V @ 3.5A or + - 24V @ 2.4A
DC OUTPUT 2:  + - 16V @ 3.5A or + - 24V @ 2.4A
DC OUTPUT 3:   + 48V @ 300mA

GBP 350.00

Isn`t the vpr spec 130mA pr slot? Does this mean that each of the outputs can power 22 modules, and the whole rack psu can power 44?

VPR spec is indeed 130mA.

So based on that you can certainly power 44 units.

@ OneRoomStudios

I am not sure if you mean the 1U rack mount or the floorbox  but if you let me know what your current requirement is then I can put a configuration for you.

I can not modify the 1U case itself but I can configure it for a lower power version which offers some savings.  However, I can (and have done for a number of users) trim the floorbox case to make it shorter for a triple output. See attached image.

What does the 2nd DB25 connector on the 11 slot do? I see the first 8 inputs have DB25 inputs and outputs. But then there is just one other DB25. Is this the I/O for the last 3 channels as in both in and out?

The 3rd one is for slot 9 /10 inputs and outputs.

Slot 11 does not appear on SubD25.

You can certainly use them that way for mixer applications. In fact the slot 11 is also designated as the monitor channel and the auxiliary pins are available separately on a 10 way header. Also,  although I deliberately obscured it on the rear view picture there is actually an extra hole on the rear panel for a 4th SubD25 connector at the bottom left.

We currently supply the built versions on our web site ( that's why the prices are higher) and the 1U rack mount PSU is not there.  All the kits are sold through here in the White Market and the rack mount PSU is available as kit.

The shorter one would be FB1 type with + -16V and +48V for VPR operation.  There is no change in the price as there is no change in the number of components used.

However the power supply is GBP 170.00

The shipping options are as follows;

Landmark Global World Economy GBP 23.00
I have never used this service before. It gives 10 days lead time but I suspect it will be longer than that.

UPS Express Saver GBP 35.00
Lead time  is normally 5 days but again sometimes it takes a couple of days longer than that.

Cemal

No sir, you are right.

1, 3 and 6 slot racks all have one slot space extra. This is firstly  for 2 unit wide modules that are mono, such as our EQ ONE, so that they do not take up a usable slot.

The second is to accommodate the mains transformer for the on board power supply. I have not listed it yet as I have only recently finished it.

Thank you too.

On the first batch of 11 slot (511) all screws were 4-40.

On the second batch the module mounting screws, rear panel mounting screws and rack mounting bracket screws were all 4-40. Top and bottom panels to side panels mounting were M3 (countersink).

On the third batch that I have now the module mounting holes on the front are 4-40 but the rest is all M3.

The rest of the racks such as 501, 503 and 506 all have UNC 4-40 throughout.

Kind regards,

C

Hi Cemal,

Roughly what footprint does this PSU end up having with the case trimmed as described above? I'm trying to work out if I could squeeze it into my (very small) outboard rack!

Best,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

We can have it at 200mm x 260mm x 70mm.  See attached image.  If you open it in paint and at 100%  it is half the original size (100mm x 130mm).

We can trim the length further down to about 220mm but we have to mount the single +48V board to the back of the front panel. You will obviously see four screw heads on the right hand side of the front panel.

However,  please note that this can only be for VPR (+ -16V and + 48V) version not 51x.

Kind regards,

Cemal

Your website isn't working, i'm getting a 404 error clicking on any product page. I'm just trying to order a module extender.

Hello,

I have checked it some minutes ago.Seems sahib works on it, but the main page is back now.
There was some trouble due to the server provider moving to a new platform, sahib told me he‘s working on it.
I‘m sure everything will work again soon.

Best regards,

Udo.

Thank you Udo.

After a couple of days hick-up, the web site is back working now.

Hi Cemal,

Thanks for the info and apologies for my slow reply!

Your solution looks great, but unfortunately portability is a big concern for me right now so I'm afraid I'll have to pass on this in favour of an SMPS based solution.

Thanks again for your help and happy new year!

Matthew

Cemal
