Stepped Pot PCB:   IN STOCK

A PCB made for beeing able to build stepped pot using 1206 SMD Resistors for those blue Uraltone Switches.
A cheaper alternative than Goldpoint and easier to solder and build IMHO, but of course SMD needs some practice, and the Uraltone
don't feel like Elma's, but they do their job just fine.
The center coin is here for practice purpose, just use it with 1% Resistors to get your marks.

Price: 2.5Euros each (excl. PPfees, and excl. Shipping)
Shipping worldwide via priority International (not insured, not trackable) etc...

Hello Tony,

I,am slowly stuffing your pcb  ;), which case model you used from modushop.
Is it the Galaxy maggiorato 124x230, is the handle an option. Looks nice  :P

Goodluck in the WM.

Yes it is.
Handle was hand made sometime ago, (not the leather) just the aluminium attachments.

Looking at the pictures, Questions
Does R4 have both the 680 ohm and the 330 ohm together?
R1 does not have the 1K ohm resistor, Just the choke connection, or both?

the slash means either or. never both.

Post by: zayance on December 03, 2013, 12:31:26 PM
Hi Winetree,

Yes it means both together for R4 k ( or only one of them if during testing you need to tweak), the double slash is for saying in parralel, and it's true that I could have written "or" on R1 silkscreen to say resistor OR choke, but I tought that would have been obvious.

Hey Zayance,

in case i don't need a pattern switch. which parts don't have to be soldered to the board?? can i leave some out??
i have a 2nd question regarding R6. is a 14kOhm with 1/2 Watt ok also?? i have two 1 Watt resistors which will add to 14,28 kOhm when soldered in series. will this work, too??

thanks

Hi There,

Depends on what polarity you want.
iirc Terminal block contact 1-2 gives Cardio
                                         2-3 gives Omni

I guess you want Cario and not Omni, and then you'll need to leave everything in place, but just jumper 1-2

I don't get your question, you mean you have a 12K resistor and want to add 2x 1K to get to 14K that's right?
Yes it's possible but that's a lot of resistors for getting there, values in parralel it will be more elegant onboard, any other combinations you have in stock? close to 28K in // maybe?? etc...
It will work, your .28 is just tolerances that are found on all the build, and builds allover this forum :)

Best regards,

thanks. good to know. but to explain my question a little bit. the pattern switch will be on the mic itself. therefore i need no pattern switch possibility in the psu.

so my question is, if i can leave out the 12k and the 14k resistor on the pcb?

my problem with R6 is, that i don't have any combination of resistors available that will give me exactly 14k. Which tolerance is alright for this resistor?? when i know i can measure my resistors and do some math to come close  ;)

or do you think a 1/2Watt 14k resistor is ok??? i have one of those around.

Yes you can leave R6-R7, but you'll need that voltage divider inside the mic then, well if you want to use this one for ioaudio's upcoming mic body and so feeding his reed relay? If not and you just want to redo an original deisgn, then you don't need that, and just feed the B+ inside the mic etc...

No it should be at least 1W.

yes you're right. the psu will be for ioaudio's upcoming U47 clone/body. the latest info ist, that he will make the pattern switch under the grill of the mic, like it is on the original u47.

Well not sure if he will drop the reed relay, so for now better just wait and see, but the PSU won't differ i think, only pattern switch connector will be left out, and if somethings change for the "newer" model concerning it's PSU, with his approval, i could redraw the thing.

Hi there,

I'll be ordering a small batch of revised version for the MK U47 PSU.
It would be matt black and ENIG finished as the MK47, so to match the PCB of the microphone itself if that could interest some of youbout there, and leave out the Reed relay voltage divider network inside the circuit as well.

Would be a small limited batch for now.

I'll keep posted when these are here.

T.

PS: Same Price, same BOM etc...

Hi There,

Stepped PCB's are in stock.
Concerning the MK47 and MK-U47 PSU PCB's,
like stated on first page, it will only be ordered on min. request.
Since there is other options showing up for these, well at least for the MK-U47.

Let me know wich diameter you would like for the stepped PCB's, there is 40 and 37mm...
Check first post.

Thanks.

Hi There,

I have stock for the MK47 version (Polar Pattern on PCB)
But no stock left for the MK-U47 (Polar pattern on Mic)

Wich one were you interested on (I ask because sometimes people get confused)

Best,

T.

It is the MK47 with the patter on PSU.

Hey Tony.  Are you getting close to running more MK-U47 (non-pattern switching) boards?  I'll be needing one soon.  Thanks.  Jimi Ray

You know the green boards will also work for the MK-U47 too.  you can just leave the pattern selection compnents out if you like (or don't - Just don't connect the pattern terminal to the XLR/Binder).

That said, I'd be in for 4 more if you're polling.  Seems none of the other 47 PSUs that have been announced are surfacing anytime soon so your board is the favorite.  The black looks cooler!  How about a universal version?  The green board done in black, with the black boards slick looks!  Then, populate what you need.

I'll commit to some of those.

Category 5,  looks like with your 4 PCBs, that gives Tony another 10 of the MK-U47 version to run :)  And thanks for the advice on just leaving the pattern selection items out of the MK-47 version.  I'll wait to see if Tony is going to run more of the MK-U47 version.

Thanks Zayance.  You might also want to put in there that when using the Triad toroid the resistor values should be 1.5k 1.5k and then 750r for the small one.  With those I get 105V with the pot top-dead-center

are these the test load resistors?... i just ordered the one 2.4k that was on the bom.  could  i add just one 1.5 k/750r or should i scrap the 2.4k all together.

thanks alot for your help cat5, i really appreciate it.

Post by: Category 5 on February 27, 2015, 04:04:07 AM
No. The test load you ordered is fine.  These are the dropper resistors.   If you use the Triad toroid you need to increase the value of the droppers to get down to 105V.  The choke and pot stay the same but the1k 10w resistors both need to be increased to 1.5k and the 680/330 parallel resistors should be replaced by a 750r 5w resistor.  Then you should get 105V somewhere in the middle of the pot range.

The Triad toroid has about 40-50V higher output so these changes are to compensate for that.

ok. ive got pretty much everything bolted down. couple questions i cant make out from the pictures.

1. which direction does the choke hook up, or does it matter? right now ive got the left wire (picture p.o.v.) going to the back hole closests to the caps.  is that the right way?

2. i have no idea where the other end of the heat sink gos. the front ive got connected to ground.

3. the test switch? i might be able to figure that one out but i might as well ask.

4. this is the biggest one. i have no idea how to wire up a 7 pin xlr.  where do 0V/PATTERN/105VDC go? do i run the audio ones straight out of the 7 pin and into the 3pin?

any info would be great, or if i could get a picture under the hood of the green board, that would be great too.  cant thank you enough.

1 - The choke is not a polarized part so it does not matter which way you hook it up.

2 - If you're talking about the dummy load resistor, one side goes to ground, the other goes to B+ by way of the small switch.  This is so you can easily switch the resistor into the circuit to provide a draw on the B+ line similar to that of the mic.   Usually the mic is a slightly larger load so if you dial in 105 with the dummy load you'll start off below that when you connect the mic.  Don't connect the mic with the dummy load engaged.

3 - One wire connects to the B+ terminal while the other connects to the dummy load.

4 - You wire it to match the mic.  I have been using this layout.  Pin 1 - Audio +, Pin 2 Audio -, Pin 3, 4, 7 Ground, Pin 5 - B+, Pin 6 - Pattern.  Don't follow this guideline unless your mic is wired that way but it's generally wise to use pin 7 (the center pin) as ground.  Double check the labeling on the connector when soldering.  It's easy to get confused and wire the connector backwards if you're not careful, which would short B+ to the Pattern selection through the output transformer in my example above.  That wouldn't be great.

got it working and calibrated with test load. havent tried it with the mic yet.

"Don't connect the mic with the dummy load engaged." - can i just disconnect the test load now from the 105vdc slot and only have mic line connected?

a million thank yous.

No sweat.  You can disconnect the load if you like but the switch is there for that.  Just disengage and you're ready to go.

I recommend readjusting the voltage when you change tubes.  Different sets of tubes have different current draw and your voltage may go up or down when swapping them.  Enough to warrant a re-check.

The voltage will fluctuate some with the mic connected.  This is normal.

Hi There,

Waiting for another batch of MK PSU.
Some asked for a "universal" one, so basically the green version but with the black finish.
Anyway it's this one that is on its way, will be here in about a week.

Stay tuned.

Thanks a lot.

No mods needed, just leave out R6 and R7(Pattern switch circuit) and its pattern terminal, and just use GND  and B+ OUT on screw terminal to feed the MKU47 mic.

Also curious if there is a build guide, I am just a little worried I would run into some issues without a good guide.

Hi,

If not too late, I need a MK-U47 PCB (without R6/R7 and without the pattern switch) for rainton's case. Zayance, are you going to have any MK-U47 PCBs for sale in this latest order? Unfortunately, the holes on the MK47 PCB I have do not line up with rainton's case...

Cheers,
Chris

Does anyone have a building guide for the MK-U47 PSU?
I have followed the scematics for ioaudio's MK-U47 mic and really wonder about the connection to the mic cable in the psu and which pin goes to what.

Sorry about my horribe english.

Hi,

Well, i received emails very fast asking for them.
While i was at work, i was counting the interests just for having a clue of quantity.
Yes pretty fast, and wasn't much expecting that, reorder soon anyway so no worries.

Zayance,  Im interested in a pair of the Federal comp boards.  Would you recommend getting your stepped attenuators with this project for input/output? ( I would assume 4 of them for input/output... or should i steer towards using the Log pots as specified in the BOM?

Hi,
The input pot is a stereo pot, so with a lorlin that would make only 6 steps. The output pot is just a 10 dB attenuator. Using stepped pots here wouldn't make sense. For ratio and threshold a stepped pot would be great. I hope that helps.

So using multi-gang greyhills or something on the input?  I'm just thinking about recall-ability.  I would actually want to do all of the controls stepped if possible except the attenuator (now that i think of it, being a tube circuit, the probability of the two sides being dead on even is probably not all that good unless every component is matched, and even then, there still could be discrepancy)

I suggest to build it with pots and decide afterwards. Pots are not that expensive. As you said, it's a tube circuit and channels are difficult to match.
