Title: ***AVDAUDIO.COM*** DIY kits, tranformers and more
Post by: avdo on April 20, 2016, 06:23:02 PM
Hello DIY lovers!

I'm happy to introduce you my new MP312-4!

For a while I wanted to create a Rack version of API312 mic preamp with 4 channels.
I'm sure people will love it and will be using different Rack modules. It was my idea to create something exciting!
I hope you will love this new MP312 4 channel mic preamp since it was made based on old API 312 version preamp.
And now you can use four channels per unit! I hope it will be a good reason to select this kit.

eBay take a cut, so if anything it should be the other way round no?  It's not for me to say I suppose, your the dude with the inventory.

It's one thing to bring new  500 series API clone kits to the market place, but to directly rip of Jeff's hard work.....I don't think your gunna find much business here dude.

Hi,

you'll also have a transformer type AP2164? How much is it?

I need 10K Impedance: 600 / possibly 200 Ohm.

Thanks for message

Hi avdo,

I've got a bunch of DOAs and input/output transformers to make 312 mic pres but no PCB or metal work.  Could I buy a 312 preamp with all metal work, pcb, knobs, switches etc except for the transformers and DOA?  I think I have enough for 8 maybe 10 preamps.

Thanks

Hey Avdo,
built my first MP36.  Very easy to build. For the next one I will better check the highs from the pcb and the L-Bracket to match the swichtes and Potentiometer better.
Worked on the first try.
And it sound so freakin good to my ears! The quality of the pcb is enormous! One of the best I've ever had in my hand !
Also your transformers.
Really good quality from sound and feel.

Hi Avdo,

some days ago i received your 2622, 2503 transformers and knobs. I have to say the tranformers are fantastic!!! I compared input trafo with EA2622 and to my ears they are very close in sound (almost identical)....

Material processing level of your transformer and knobs is also very high.

Thank you very much for your great work!

M.

Hey all,

I just wanted to chime in and say that I built four of the 312 kits recently. I was really impressed with them. It was a relatively easy build... (making the 2520 opamp is a little tricky, but I understand AVD has a new layout that is a little easier to build)

The faceplate is very minimalist, which I like. There's an LED to let you know if 48v phantom power is on and the knobs are a nice touch. Overall these were a straightforward project

As far as sound... I'm absolutely blown away. They are able to capture some amazing tones from modest levels of gain all the way cranked to 11 (yes there are 11 steps if you go with the Grayhill option) Also the noise floor on these is lower than any preamp I own. Like astonishingly low.

I think user AVDO did a great job with these kits. I'm planning to build another four of the 312 kits and am looking forward to trying their version of the Melcor 1731 opamp when I next order arrives.

I really must say again.
Andrey is a great guy !
Ordered some parts from him.
He's always very helpful, has a great customer service and is always there for a bit tech talk.
His products have nearly zero tolerances and even if there is a problem he is very helpful and try to fix it.
Thank you for all !

Hey guys,
want to give you a small impressions of Andreys 2622 and 2503 Transformers in a 312 copy. I used the gar1731 for this record.
It's unprocessed and played trough Rode NT5 with Michael Joly capsule mod.
It's a demo from my practice room, so no studio application.
I'm also no professional drummer, but I hope you get a impression.

I'm thinking about getting the 1176 as my first big build, however the Mouser cart says I need to order a minumum of 2500 of the 2N5457 JFET. I feel that's a bit excessive.  ;D (https://imgur.com/a/DgYCJoE)

Hi guys!

Price: 250$ + shipping!

Will be redy for shipping from 15 of November!

sivert_h, hello!
Sorry for delay! On the trip now.
But will try to help you as I told you in pm.
1) 2n3391 and 2n3392.
I think it could be works, but it has to do some tests. 2n3392 has less HFE than 2n3391. It gives you less gain. And not sure it will works good.
You can find this parts on:

www.banzaimusic.com

They are from Germany, and have good parts you need.

2) About resistors. You can change all these resistors as you wrote.
Or you can use 1/2w resistors without any problems.

3)  25k attack pot.
Check please same website for ordering this. They have same pot too.

If you will need more help, please, contact me!
I have all this parts in stock. If you want can help you with.

You are welcome!

I have an issue with the calibration steps for the 1176.
Under "Discrete Meter Circuit/Null Adjust" it says:
  1. Zero the compressors "GR" meter with the R71 zero adjust pot.
Thats fine, it works. However for step 2:
  2. Adjust pot R75 (null adjust) for 0.0 Volts across R74. It is TP2 place!

it is always 0.0 Volts across R74 no matter which way i turn R75. Turning R75 only changes the VU meter. So I set R71 and R75 so that the VU meter says 0 dB, no need for step 3. Is this correct?

The issue continues during the next step "Reduction Meter Tracking Adjustment". After switching JumperT1 to ON
"Your meter will most likely drop. Don’t worry! Set it back to zero by using the R71 zero adjust pot."
The meter drops, but turning R71 changes nothing on the VU meter. That can't be correct?

Doing the rest of the calibration changes nothing on the VU meter. I have no idea where the error is. Help?! :-\ :'(

Hi guys!

Hi, I would like to order one of these.  Does it include transformers?  How would you describe the difference between 1731 and 2520 opamps?

Hi rockinrob86,

The MP312-4 DIY kit contains:
Metal case (with screws kit)
Metal case for power supply
PCBs (Main PCB and PCB for power supply)
Power transformer (115V or 220V included)
Four ps of GAIN potentiometer
Four T-Pad 600ohm attenuator
DOA PCB (4ps of 2520 or 1731)

Audio transformers are not included! To order separatly!

1731 and 2520 has small difference. 1731 has more clear sound, It is my opinion. But 2520 more deeper in the mid range.

dasnevestheo, hello!
312 kit has only PCB of DOA. I can add as a bonus two different DOA.
But if you need full DOA's kit, you must to order it separately!

You are welcome!

Hi,

do you have a mouser cart for the 312-4 bom ? I must admit that it would be very helpful and a big time saving. Or at least, do you have an estimation of the cost for the bom components ?

Cheers

I was going crazy trying to find out why my MP312 build is blowing caps

Come to find out the pcb has a white stripe on the anode of the electro cap footprints for some bizarre reason

For people like me who are too stupid to read the microscopic + and - on the footprint, the cap should look like its backwards

I’ve been playing around with my newly built MP312 pair this weekend and I’m really happy with them.

They sound and look great. Very nice work, especially with the transformers

Fuzz Face, hello!
Once I decided the white stripe is a "+" on capacitor. I matched 1/3 of capacitor place by white stripe! It is help me to find "+". But I know it is confuses some guys to solder it right. Sorry me for this please. But I think I must to do better my manuals. It is takes a lot of time. But it is first reason to do this. And I hope to do manual for all projects soon!
But also I hope this top help to avoid same mistake to others in future!
If you will need something else, remember to me please, I will add you something for free!
And hope you are sorry me!

No worries. It was my fault to not notice the polarity as indicated on the silkscreen. All working perfectly now

I don’t need anything free but thanks for the offer. If you would like any help with your manuals I am happy to help.

The MP312 was an extremely easy build. The PCB itself is quite self explanatory aside from my mistake with the cap polarity.

Feel free to PM or email me if you need help with manuals
