Title: NEW: authentic style LA2A, Pultec EQP-1A, MEQ-5 & Ultimate Mic-PSU chassis
Post by: rainton on August 01, 2016, 01:35:41 PM
Hey folks,

it took some time and effort but now I'm finally ready to offer my chassis here in the White Market.
Those of you who were part of the group buys in the past know that we're talking about high quality -
in case of the Pultec and the LA2A very close to the vintage original chassis - ready to build:

************************************************************************************************************

LA2A style P2P chassis V2:

all parts of the kit:

finished unit from the inside:

finished unit in the rack:

The front of the chassis is powder coated RAL7035 light grey with black silk screening,
the back of this new V2 version consists of a 2 piece aluminum chassis - just like the vintage units.
This make the build much easier because the entire wiring can be done on the open L-frame back&bottom part of the chassis.

It features all holes and cutouts necessary to build an authentic LA2A style compressor without any further modification, drilling etc...

The chassis is designed for the original UTC HA-100x input and UTC A-24 output transformers,
but I also offer adapter plates for UTC A10 input transformer and Sowter in- and output transformers.

The VU-meter cutout fits the Sifam AL39-WF meter as well as the "Teletronix" branded replacement
meter available at don-audio.com in Germany and IMS in the US.

All chassis screw holes are threaded for extremely easy assembling and the chassis also features
vintage style thumb screws for fastening the front panel -  just like the vintage units.

SOLD OUT
I'm preparing a new batch but it will take about 6 weeks until it's ready for shipping.
In the meantime if you need a chassis NOW, Don-Audio still has a few of my LA2A style chassis kits in stock - at a slightly higher price though...

The adapter plates are 8.50 EUR each

Here's an extensive package put together by fellow forum member Gambaholic which includes a BOM, an excellent
graphic layout of the components inside the chassis, schematics and HQ pics - it's almost foolproof ;)

PULTEC EQP-1A style P2P chassis:

front:

back:

back with mounted filter units:

my finished prototype:

my finished prototype from the back:

Other than my prototype on the pics the chassis available here feature cutouts for XLR in & out instead
of a screw terminal and also a cutout for a IEC socket (in my prototype the power cable was hardwired
just like in some vintage units)

In addition the main chassis the kit includes 2x filter boxes to be mounted to the back of the main chassis
(as in the original unit) to house the filter sections of the EQP-1A.

The front panel is powder coated blue-grey - very close to the original color and silk screened.
The back and the filter units are powder coated in a rough dark grey color - similar to the hammer finish
of the original units but much more hit and scratch resistant.

Like the LA2A style chassis the EQP-1A style chassis sports all necessary cutouts to build an authentic tube
equalizer without any further drilling or modification. The chassis is designed for the original Triad HS-56 input
and HS-29 interstage transformers and for the newly available Cinemag S-217D (authentic Peerless S-217D replica)
transformers.
However there are adapter plates available for the use of Sowter transformers.

Here's a graphic layout of the components within the chassis and filter units - it shows that building one of these gems
is not really as difficult as it seems :)

http://www.mediafire.com/file/2b8py0igkenkh7l/Pultec_EQP-1A__layout_rev1_31.pdf

And here's a  paper by Chris Preston of vintagewindings.com about "facts and fiction about the Pultec EQ"
Great information about filter caps etc..: http://www.vintagewindings.com/tech%20swag/Pultec-Facts-&-Fiction.pdf

And many people have asked for it - FINALLY a BOM with some additional infos on parts :)
If you find any mistakes please let me know:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/zfeckxx7jeo1jfg/raintons_Pultec_EQP-1A_Parts_List_rev.1_2.pdf

The price for one complete chassis is 250 EUR (+ VAT if applicable) and includes:

- main chassis
- front panel
- 2x filter boxes

3 kits in stock

The adapter plates for input, interstage and output transformers are 7.50 EUR ea. (+ VAT if applicable)

discussion over here: http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=62061.0

************************************************************************************************************

The new kid on the block - PULTEC MEQ-5 style P2P chassis:

The chassis is built pretty much the same way as the EQP-1A style enclosure - here's some pics of my finished prototype:

front:

back:

from the other side:

(https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/5bd2/2tckbp44nqdnv0b5g.jpg) (https://www.mediafire.com/view/?2tckbp44nqdnv0b)

Like the above mentioned chassis this one also sports all necessary cutouts to build an authentic tube
equalizer without any further drilling or modification. The chassis is designed for the original Triad HS-56 input
and HS-50 output transformers.
However there are adapter plates available for the use of Sowter transformers and with little modification other vintage
transformers should fit the Triad HS footprint.

Other than my prototype the chassis available here features cutouts for XLR connectors instead of the terminal strip and a cutout for a modern IEC power connector instead of the hard wired power cord.

Also for the MEQ-5 I made a graphic layout of the components within the chassis and filter units - it shows all connections inside this wonderful piece of gear. If you follow it exactly it shouldn't be too difficult to end up with a wonderful sounding EQ :)

http://www.mediafire.com/file/cn5t2z828h8n6ax/raintons_MEQ-5_layout_rev1_2.pdf

BOM:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/7bpp4bbu540412h/raintons_Pultec_MEQ-5Parts_List_rev.101.pdf

Again all this is made to my best knowledge, but nobody's perfect - if you find a mistake please let me know and I'll correct it asap.

The price for one complete chassis is 195 EUR (+ VAT if applicable) and includes:

- main chassis
- front panel
- 1x filter boxes

15 kits in stock

The adapter plates for input, interstage and output transformers are 7.00 EUR ea. (+ VAT if applicable)

Wow!
Beautiful work, and that PSU looks like an authentic oldie, only a bit more robust. *applause*

Me thinks my 47 project needs one of those puppies to round out the acoutriment.

Is there room in the architechture for installing a pattern selector switch?

Thank you,

John

Hi John,

of course :)

Since not all mic projects need the pattern switch on the PSU I didn't want to have a huge 10mm hole in chassis that probably sits there unused.
So I came up with a different idea:

In the position where the pattern switch goes I designed a tiny hole 0.8mm. It's located in the middle above the XLR and binder connectors (the spot where you would actually expect the pattern switch ;))

With the the hammer finish of the chassis you don't see it if you don't know it's there - but it's there. Here's a close up:

And IF you need a pattern switch you just use a drill to enlarge the hole.
No measuring to find the right spot, no pre-drilling etc.  8)

Inside the chassis the dividing panel is not centered, so there should be enough space for a
rotary switch (unless you want to use one of those big military ceramic switches ;))

hope that helps

It's my first revision, but if you follow it exactly it should be a foolproof instruction to wire up an authentic EQP-1A
with my chassis :)

Alright guys stock is getting low on the Pultecs - only 6 kits left so far of which 2 are reserved already.
8 LA2A style chassis left of which 1 is reserved already. Mic kits I still got a couple more - 15 kits left.

BTW: I added an extensive all-inclusive package for the LA2A build put together by fellow forum member Gambaholic (thank you so much!!) This package includes pretty much everything you need to know when building an authentic LA2A replica - BOM, schematics, HQ pics and  a beautiful graphic layout of the components inside the chassis.

If you don't manage to build a proper LA2A style comp with this package you should probably look for another hobby  ;D

Hi Martin,

It looks like from the pictures you have a place for 2 pots for adjusting the B+ and H+, but only one pot seems to come to the front with a slot to adjust with a screwdriver. Any reason you didn't make both pots accessible from the front panel with a small hole? Also, is there a hole on the bottom for the other pot to be adjusted without opening the unit? I can't tell from the pix.

Love what you did, however!  ;D

Best,

Mike

Edit: realized there were 2 pot holders

Yes, you're right Mike, there are two pot holders.
The first one makes the pot accessible from the front with the cutouts for the measuring jacks accessible from the bottom  and the other one makes the pot accessible from the bottom with two extra optional cutouts for measuring jacks - also on the bottom.
Optional in terms of that the cutouts are pre-cut for the most part but not completely.
So if you need them, you just have to burst out the metal at the according (pre-cut) spots but if you don't need them you won't have two gaping holes in the bottom.

That was also the reason why we had one pot pointing downwards making it accessible from the bottom, while the other one is accessible from the front:
Not all tube mic projects need the 2nd pot (i.e. U47), but all of them need the first one.
And we didn't want to ruin the looks for those who only need one pot ;)

1x LA2A style chassis going San Francisco,
1x Mic PSU kit going to L.A.
1x Mic PSU kit going to Northern-Germany

The bad news is now I'm running out of all kinds of chassis and Pultec EQP-1A style chassis are sold out completely.

The good news is - since I received so many requests:  a new run of EQP-1A style chassis will be coming in the middle of November.
So PULTEC STYLE CHASSIS BACK IN STOCK IN APPROX. 3-4 WEEKS  :)

What would be nice would be an exact list of the PCB's that the Ultimate PSU chassis supports. I read through this whole thread and the feeler thread and could not find one definitive list, just a smattering of items here and there. Just a suggestion!

Does this fit the Chunger/Matador PCB?

Thanks; I already ordered and am waiting in anticipation to getting an awesome case! Thanks Martin!!

Great idea Mike!

Regarding Chungers/Matador's pcb  - there are no mounting holes for their pcb yet , but as a matter of fact I just read about their pcb and was going to ask them if they could send me the dimension of pcb and mounting holes, so I could add it to the officially supported pcb for the next run :)

I couldn't tell from the pix of your current Ultimate chassis, but do you have holes for the MataChung C12 PSU PCB? It looked like it, but was too blurry when I blew it up.

Great to hear! :)

I just realized there were a couple of new posts here - somehow my notifications for this thread were disabled with the last forum update...
Now I'm back on track again.

BTW: I just updated the graphic layout for the EQP-1A build - latest revision is rev 1.31 make sure you use that one for your build. You can find it on the first page in the EQP-1A section or here:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/2b8py0igkenkh7l/Pultec_EQP-1A__layout_rev1_31.pdf

Also some more news - due to people continuously requesting MEQ-5 chassis while the group buy is over long time ago - I decided to do another LIMITED run of MEQ-5 style chassis. I'll update this thread soon with more information ;)

Hey folks,

haven't updated this thread in a while because there was so much going on.

Finally - after many of you kept asking for another run of the MEQ-5 style chassis I managed to do it :)
Another limited run of them is available here now.

I hope you like them!

If you successfully built an LA2A, EQP-1A, MEQ-5 or a tube mic PSU with one of my chassis - you're welcome to post here and share your experience!

Thanks to all of you for the support!

Folks,

I'm running low on LA2A style and mic PSU chassis kits - only a couple of each left.
I'll try to do another run as soon as possible, but I'm all absorbed by a new chassis kit project I'm working on, so it might
take a while until I get to having new PSU and LA2A style chassis made.

So if you were thinking about building either of the two mentioned above you should move fast  ;)

Ultimate Mic PSU chassis kits are SOLD OUT now!

We're working on a Rev.2 version of it.
This new revision will also support Chunger & Matador's universal tube mic pcbs (both passive and active)
The  laser engraving in the dividing panel will reflect the changes and we made it easier to see which pcb belongs where.

Also we corrected some minor flaws - the M49 pcb will now be moved more towards the center of the chassis to allow for easier
wiring and we corrected some screw holes that made it difficult for some to attach the lid since powder coating had added more to the surface thant we expected. Now these screws should go in easily ;)

You can preorder as off today - and we plan to have the new ULTIMATE Mic PSU chassis kit MkII ready for shipping in 4 weeks.

BTW - there's only 1 last LA2A style chassis left in stock!

LA2A style chassis are SOLD OUT as well now!

I'm preparing a new batch but it will take about 6 weeks until it's ready for shipping.

Also for the LA2A style chassis I'm thinking about doing a new revision - even closer to the vintage chassis.
That would mean:

- new back chassis consisting of two parts instead of one. The one part being the bottom & back panel and the other part being top & side panels. That would probably cost a little more to manufacture, but it would be much easier to work on and to wire it all up :)

- new custom hinges that look exactly like the ones used in the vintage units and are built like a tank.

- new cutout where the vintage units had a can cap mounted to the back panel. A blanking plate would be included so you could choose wether to use a vintage style can cap, or modern electrolytics.

Basically the only thing pointing towards a modern build would be the IEC socket on the back.

In the meantime if you need an LA2A style chassis NOW, Don-Audio.com still has a few of my current revision LA2A style chassis kits in stock - at a slightly higher price than here though...

I'd like to hear your opinions on my above mentioned thoughts regarding a new - more vintage looking, and easier to work on revision of LA2A style chassis :)

Congratz, very nice and well done quality!
Compared to the price tag it's worth the money.

If I build a third Pultec I will order one for sure.

Martin
I'm sure you've already made up your mind - sorry I just saw this - but I applaud you going towards as real as possible.

I plan on getting one of your new LA2A chassis when you have them available, so please put me down on your list!

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks! :)

Available at the moment are a few last Pultec EQP-1A style chassis kits, Pultec MEQ-5 style chassis kits and a new batch of Ultimate Mic PSU V2 chassis kits just came in.

I'm out of LA2A style chassis but already working on a new revision with some changes to the chassis work as mentioned earlier. I'm still refining and hopefully we can start production soon...

I was wondering whether there is some news about the revised PSU chassis supporting the PCBs from Chunger/Matador? I would be interested in these for an ELA M251E build.

Hi Martin,

I received the MEQ-5 chassis and the quality is stunning. Thank you!

To me, there is only one problem on both of my units : the screws of the filterbox base (so the screws attaching the fiter box to the chassis) do not match the holes in the chassis. There's at least a 2mm height difference, so the box can't even be forced in. I need to redrill two holes on each chassis.  :(

What?!
That was a known problem and
all chassis were supposed to be corrected.

Let me investigate.
I personally had some of the corrected chassis in hand and the filter unit fit perfectly.

Anyway you can return the back part of the chassis free of charge and we'll replace them with corrected ones - just wait until you get a "retour" stamp from don-audio (who takes care of shipping & handling for me)

If you don't want to wait and work on it yourself:
Don't drill two extra holes!!
Instead use a 6mm drill and enlargen the existing 4 holes on each chassis.
Works perfectly well, only takes a minute and is invisible with filter unit mounted :)

Anyway sorry about that - I have to figure out why in the world you received two cases without corrected footprint for the filter unit...

And please let me know what you wanna do :)

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the instant support and the tip!

I have all the tools needed here to enlarge the holes to 6mm. So everything should be fine! :)

Hi Martin,

I'm now putting together my 251 PSUs and I'm about to order a few missing parts. Initially I was assuming the Binder connector is basically the same a 7-Pin XLR, but after a closer look I realized that apparently this is not the case. So it means that when using the Binder, I cannot use a normal 7-Pin Neutrik connector on the cable side or is there a workaround? I would like to avoid making a special cable for the 251s.

Cheers and Happy New Year  ;)
Waldemar

Hey Waldemar,

yes the chassis is designed for the binder 691 series, so the regular Neutrik 7-pin XLR won't fit.

What you could do though it using a Switchcraft Panel Mount 7-pin XLR - it should fit - at least judging by the drawings on their website:

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the tip, that could be a good alternative!
Just out of curiosity: Is there any advantage of using the Binder connector except for the cool looks?  8)

Well, I guess it's sturdier than a regular XLR, but apart from that it's easier to solder because of the larger footprint...
and yes it looks cooler, too ;)

... or perhaps he's just on holidays!

sorry for the silence guys!

I'm terribly busy at the moment as I'm working on content for my first video & e-papers series on www.analogvibes.com besides working in the studio besides family etc...  ;D

Again I'm really sorry - it's hard to catch up with my mails at the moment.

But that's why I'm working so hard on my analogvibes project - as soon as I have created a project related knowledge base, I feel I might probably get less mails, because most questions are answered there already...or maybe I'm wrong??  :o  ;D

Anyways - I do have mic PSU chassis kits in stock - it actually ain't 33 of them anymore, but there are some left!

I also have a few last Pultec EQP-1A style chassis kits as well as some Pultec MEQ-5 style chassis kits in stock.

In a few days I'll launch the new 2nd revision LA2A style chassis kits at an introductory price on analogvibes - including BOM, detailed wiring layout etc.

Speaking of wiring layout - the latest video of my series on building a "tube onto compressor" + a 24-pages wiring layout was released on analogvibes TODAY. So if you're interested, you should definitely check it out!

Thanks
Martin

Hello all,
Regarding the ultimate mic-PSU chassis:
There are many people that have already built it, I´m sure.
In the poctop PSU built for the M49, where to connect the status light, the Fender pilot light with a bulb of 7V ?
And yes, I already have the open version leaving space for C5 on poctop´s M49 board.
I´m sorry whether this topic is already treated in this thread. No bashing, please.

Thanks
Manfred
