Hey guys - I did it again ;D
As some of you might know one of my recent projects was an authentic recreation of a vintage Pultec EQP-1A.
Just after I finished the EQP-1A I was so thrilled by the result that I decided I just had to build an MEQ-5 as well.
So I designed an authentic chassis and built one from scratch - as with my other recent projects I wanted to stay as close to the vintage units as possible, so I used mostly original components throughout the entire unit (such as original transformers, NOS Allen & Bradley pots, NOS RCA tubes , etc...)
During the group buy for the EQP-1A chassis I mentioned to some members, that I might do an MEQ-5 in the future and the feedback I got was I should definitely start a group buy for it as well...
...so, well - if there's indeed some interest I will do a run.
But I'm sure you want to know what it will look like so here's some pics of my finished prototype:
front:
back:
also here's a little peak inside before I wired it all up:
With this chassis you will be able to build an authentic replica of a vintage Pultec MEQ-5.
For those who don't want to use the original transformers - as alway there will be adapter plates available
to mount Sowter transformers instead :)
As with the past group buys the final pricing depends on how many chassis we get together here.
We have to be at least 10 - everything below is ridiculously expensive - so:
10-19 chassis would be: 225 EUR (excl. VAT if applicable)
20+ chassis would be: 195 EUR (excl. VAT if applicable)
All chassis would come with powder coated blue-grey front panel with white silk screening and powder coated similar to hammer finish dark grey back chassis.
All kits feature all cutouts needed to build an authentic recreation of the "real thing" and includes the filter box (also powder coated) to be mounted to the back of the main chassis. All screw holes needed to put the chassis together are fitted with threaded inserts to allow for extremely easy assembly.
I have to add that due to "Pultec" being a registered trademark the front panel will only say: "Midrange Equalizer MEQ-5"
Even though this is an extremely simple circuit (the amp section is even much simpler than the EQP-1A) there's not much info on the web when it comes the wiring and layout of the components inside the chassis. So I will try to do a graphical layout that shows it all just like I'm doing it for my EQP-1A chassis at the moment. So even though it'S p2p, this is not a very complicated build...
Alright folks, let's see if there's enough interest.
And I'm still open for discussion (i.e. my prototype has a cutout for a screw terminal on the back just like the vintage units instead of XLRs, but for the EQP-1A the majority wanted cutouts for XLRs) so let me know what you think :)
Martin
P.S.: Yes my MEQ-5 sounds amazing ;D

Hi Martin,
That looks amazing!
Please sign me up for two!

Martin
i will take one.
-
definitely interested in 2 ! ;)

I'd like one chassis. Can you discuss custom drillings? (Fewer), is there room for XLR or is terminal strip the only option?
-

Yes we can discuss.
But since the chassis are made of solid steel I think it's not a good option to leave out the transformer cutouts completely because it's no fun drilling huge holes in there...
There's room for XLRs. And I guess that's what most people want, right?
-
We're at 6 chassis so far - including the one I'd take for myself it's 7.
So we still need some more people to make it happen.
This thread has only be open for a week a or so, so I can keep this open for a while to gather more interest but I'm thinking about setting a time frame?
Also I guess many people expect this project to be too complicated and difficult? It's actually one of the simplest p2p projects I did so far :)
-
Come on people!
Checkout this video of what this eq can do

-
I would like two. I would like XLR connectors so my LA2A's and EQP-1A all match. These all are top quality. For future reference I will probably take two of anything rainton makes, awesome quality and picks the right kind of gear to make.
Sometimes I don't check the forum as much as I should, so I am a little late in joining.

Yes I love it!
It's so unbelievably smooth!
When I first used the 1.5K - 5K peak boost it was making it sound nicer around the selected frequency but it didn't sound like t was boosting that much, but when I checked the freq. response through a graph (with knob fully CW) I saw it was indeed boosting by 8db!!
I actually need a second one that's why I would also love to see this group buy happen :)

Thanks for the kind words!! :)
So we're t least approaching 10 chassis...
...how long should I keep this feeler open to give everybody who's not checking the board on a daily basis the chance to join?

Hi there !
I would definitly be interested for 1 !
count me in !!!

count me in !!!
OK great! So we're at 10 now :)
I'll give it until Sept. 15th and see if we can cross the 20 chassis mark - would be great for everyone!
I hope it's ok to wait for you guys?
Martin
-
I don't Know if it had been mentionned, but so you have an idea of the price for 1 Chassis Mark?
-

It's mentioned in the first post ;)
Or do you mean how much it would cost if we only had one chassis made?

Martin when will payment be required. i may be up for one or maybe 2?

Martin when will payment be required. i may be up for one or maybe 2?
Well, this thread is open until September 15th - I guess I would manage to get in touch within 1 week after that
and then collect the funds in the week after...
...I don't know - personally I'm in no hurry, so one week more or less doesn't really matter to me. I don't know how the rest
of the group buy members thinks about that.
Fact is I can only place the order with the manufacturers when all funds are collected :)
So my guess is sometime last week of September - first week of October?
-
i take 2 of these beauties ...+knobs set, if you plan to make it.
Thank you
-
Yep in for 2 here too buddy

As a beginner, would it be completely stupid of me to join in on this one? I was of course planning on something a little easier, you know, like a complete kit with all parts included.
The guide you are planning to make, Martin, how detailed will it be? Will it be readable for a novice?

Hey Hanso,
the circuit itself - especially the amp circuit of the MEQ-5 is very simple.
But you could go to my White Market thread and check the wiring guide etc. of the EQP-1A and see if it's readable for you.
Then you can judge for yourself:
http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=63423.0
The EQP-1A has a more complex amp circuit compared to the MEQ5, so the latter should actually be a little bit easier to read.
But as Hugo said: It's a tube project and there's over 300V in some parts of the circuit compared to 30V in an 1176!
So it might indeed be a good idea to start with a well documented low voltage kit first.
BTW: We're at 16 chassis now - if we can get only 4 more chassis together there'll be a price drop for all of us!! So come on guys ;)
-
Thank you very much Hugo and Martin! That sounds like excellent advice. I feel I need a little experience before I risk my life for a piece of tube gear.
I am kind of tempted to sign up for a chassis anyway, it's so beautiful! It can sit on the shelf for a while and I can get on with it when I'm ready... Will let you know about that.
-
I take one !
Don't know, when I have the time to build it, but I know, that I will come to a point, where I would really regret to pass on this offer.
-
I'll take 2 had mentioned i might be interested in one ealier but had not committed. So 2 total for 59flame thanks scot
-
Rainton's reproduction chassis' are very well done. In case you have never seen one take it from me the quality is high. Well worth the purchase. This MEQ-5 will be my 4th build using his chassis. I'm already down for one.
-
Do you plan to make the HLF-3c ?..my pultec collection would be "complete" !
-
Do you plan to make the HLF-3c ?..my pultec collection would be "complete" !
If we can gather enough interest why not. But I believe could be a little more difficult to find enough people...
I'll extend the feeler until the weekend - we're at 17 or 18 chassis right now - we're so close to the next price drop!
hopefully we can reach the magic 20!
Martin

BTW: here's a little peak into my unit using my prototype chassis:

Put me down for 2! Hopefully that puts us over the 20 mark :D
-
2 for me as well, please.
-
Alright guys,
that makes it 21 :D
WE MADE IT!!!
I'll still keep this feeler open until Sept. 18th - so whoever thought about joining us, better do it soon ;)
Martin
-
Last call guys - tomorrow night this feeler will close for good ;)
-
I can not believe there are less than 20 peoples involved in this crazy product...it does not make any sense
-
Martin, I'm real close to taking two. I assume you used Vintage Windings inductors? And how difficult is it to get those wafer switches for freq selection? Thanks!
-
Martin, I'm real close to taking two. I assume you used Vintage Windings inductors? And how difficult is it to get those wafer switches for freq selection? Thanks!
Very simple to find them on ebay very very cheap from army stock of eastern europe. These are ceramic rotary switches NOS you have to search
-

Hey Robert,
As Hugo mentioned already the ceramic rotary switches are still very easy to obtain and pretty cheap as well.
You could either go for russian military switches like this one here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-POLE-11-POSITIONS-RUSSIAN-UNSHORTING-CERAMIC-ROTARY-SWITCH/282176868339?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D39218%26meid%3D07b6f1c3bc7e41dfa7b77345d2c396b8%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D282034126061
Or since you're in the US you could also look for US-made NOS CENTRALAB ceramic switches.
That's what was used in the vintage units, but they're more expensive and especially for buyers outside of US it makes little sense to go with them, since the russian made ceramic switches are pretty much identical to the Centralabs but way cheaper.
BTW - I received your message Robert but haven't found time yet to get back to you. I think your findings are extremely interesting and could be very valuable for the DIY community!! Maybe you should share some of it in my EQP-1A discussion thread and/or in the FB group (more info on that is to be found in the EQP-1A thread as well)
I will still try to respond to your message in full length as soon as I can :)
Martin
-
Martin, I'll buy two chassis. Will regret it later if I don't.
-
Feeler closed.
I will get in touch with all group buy members soon :)
-
I updated the first post with a list of those who are part of the group buy.
All group buy members should be notified by now. If for whatever reason you haven't received a notification letter from me, please get in touch with me!
As soon as everybody has paid his share, I'll place the order with the manufacturer :)
Martin
-
Please all pay what you ordered....we are all waiting for this ^^
-
Sorry guys -2more days I've got 329 to go for the eqp 1's as well as its last chance to get them
-
already paid not posted though
-
Sorry guys,
I'm on family vacation at the moment - so not online too often.
Thread updated. Only one member missing now.
I tried to reach Sinkia already - hope to hear back from him within the next two days - otherwise we'll have to proceed without him I'm afraid...
-
already paid not posted though
Maybe i understood bad your post...but here is a feeler..so everybody have to wait for the production. As always for that type of project, shipping can take several months..
-
Alright guys,
we're in production :)
Sinkia and another member pulled back, so there are 3 chassis available to whoever wants them first.
Just let me know.
From my experience in the past we have to calculate 5-6 weeks until the chassis are finished.
I'll keep you posted as soon as there's news!
Martin
-
okay,
I take another one, I already sent an email
have a nice holiday,

Excited about the build and I am starting to look into ordering parts. Can someone point to me to the where I can find the schematic and if possible a BOM? I haven't been as successful finding info on this project as on other ones. I found a couple of schematics but since I have never seen the original I don't know if they are true to the design. Thanks for the help. Just want to make sure I order the correct Transformers and etc.

Good news everyone!!
The chassis arrived!
Unfortunately I missed to have one chassis shipped here to my place as all other chassis are going directly to my friend Aaron @ Don-Audio where they'll be prepared for shipping.
So I can't tell much about how they turned out yet - but:
a) Tomorrow Aaron will do the quality check for me
b) I didn't miss to have some of the front panels shipped here from the silkscreened's and they look perfect!!
The powder coating, print and everything. So based on that I guess the back chassis will be of the same quality 8)
I'm sending out the screws and everything necessary to complete the kits to Don-Audio and I'm positive we can start shipping them out on MONDAY!!
Hooray!!

Yes - all chassis have shipped - let me know when you get them and how you like it :)
Martin
BTW: I have some original Dakaware Pultec frequency selection knobs left over - I was about to post in the Black Market,
but if someone here wants them - EUR 6.00 ea. + shipping gets them.
At Don-Audio they're more than EUR 10.00 ea. ;)
I have 10 left.

I take 6 !
I'll send a pm
and yes, the chassis arrived, superb as usual ;D

Martin, any news on a layout drawing and BOM? Thanks!
-
Will the hammond 370jx fit the holes of the chassis ? too late, it is ordered...really impatient to order all other parts ^^
Thank you
-
Received the chassis. They are very nice.
Martin, was waiting for Christmas to pass. Any hope to see a layout/wiring drawing and maybe a BOM anytime soon? Thank you very much!

Sorry Robert,
I didn't make it before Christmas because I simply had so much work at the studio.
I'm on vacation with my family until Jan 6th but I'll try to finish it when I'm back
Martin
-
Martin,
No need to apologize. Totally understand about the season and work.
FWIW, I plan to use the Carnhill inductors sold by Colin at AML for my build, given my experience with bulding my EQP-1A clones with other inductors.
Happy New Year,

Does anyone have a wiring diagram or any BOM info? Thanks.
-
Here you go :
http://www.vintagewindings.com/gen%20pop/8299543VW8335/ProAudio1/Pultec%20MEQ5%20Manual.pdf
or just google "Pultec MEQ5 Manual" this is the version with solid state recification.
there's also a version with tube rectification, I attach it here. Bom is easy to do yourself, there's also one in the facebook group.
-
Thanks Kosi!
Is the Facebook group for the EQP-1, or is there another one for the MEQ-5?
-
It's for all of raintons chassis. LA2A, EQP1A and MEQ5.
Meanwhile, there's a lot of info. Over 100 members.
Only problem for me: I'm not a Facebook fan...
But have a look, it's free !
-
Kosi, I'm not a FaceBook fan either. I don't have a FB account so I can't see the page. :-(
-
Guys!
Sorry for the long silence - I just got so much work at the moment!
Finally I managed to finish the graphic layout for the MEQ-5 and it's available now for download here: :)
EDIT: New revision 1.1: http://www.mediafire.com/file/fv84voidzkqakhq/raintons_MEQ-5_layout_rev1_1.pdf
It was more work then I expected even though I did pretty much the same thing for the EQP-1A already...I think I simply forgot
how much work it was ;)
As always it's done to my best knowledge but mistakes can happen, so if you find any please let me know asap.
Next up is the BOM - I'm working on it.
hang in there
P.S.: If you follow the layout you probably won't need an extra BOM - the circuit is pretty simple - even though it might appear differently at first sight... ;D
Martin
-
Awesome!!! Thanks Martin!
-
Kosi found 1 mistake:
The resistor connected to the 2.5k rev log pot is supposed to be 270R - not 270K!
I'll update the layout later this morning ;)
Thanks Kosi!

-
hi,
Is that normal the 4 back box chassis screws don't fit the 4 holes?
No - you'd be the first one out of all Pultec style chassis kits out there.
I sent you a mail already - please send me some pics so I understand what we're talking about.
Is it the screw holes that mount the base of the filter unit to the box, or is it the filter unit not fitting the main chassis?
If the latter I suspect Don-Audio might have sent you an EQP-1A style filter box for your MEQ-5 style chassis ::)
Thanks
Martin

Issue fixed ! ... Thanks Martin

Guys!!
Finally I was able to finish my rev 1.0 of the BOM.
As always - it's made to the best of my knowledge, but mistakes can occur - so if you find any - please let me know :)

I'm a newbie so could you tell, for exemple what TYPE of resistor, what POWER RATING and what TOLERANCE? Because Mouser for exemple gives thousand references :( :( :(
-
I'm a newbie so could you tell, for exemple what TYPE of resistor, what POWER RATING and what TOLERANCE? Because Mouser for exemple gives thousand references :( :( :(
Well, actually the confusion is not only with resistors but all components :( :( I really don't know what and where to buy ??!! Damned, I'm blowing my mind on this !!!! Too many references. Arf :(
Does somebody made an explicit BOM with items reference numbers? I would make a statue of that guy in my garden ;)
-
In terms of resistors, in the amp and filter section you can take 0.5W carbon comps (more like the original) or metal film (more modern)
Except that one 5W resistor specified in the BOM and layout
In the power supply all Wattages are specified - here you can take carbon comp or if you want less drift metal oxide
All caps in the filter circuit can be 200V or probably even less.
For the rest if not specified choose 500V or above and your on the safe side.
I don't like to add mouser numbers to the BOM since for many people Mouser is not the best option.
Since you're in Europe i would choose Banzaimusic for resistors caps etc.
Much cheaper than mouser and easier to find the right components faster ;)
-
Martin !!! You're the king !!

Hi there,
If somebody has succed in building his MEQ-5, could he share close pics of his work ???
-
Hi again,
It's writted on the BOm that we need 2 x 0,2 uf and 2 x 0,47 uf in the low filter section. But on the layer, I only see one of each. What am I missing?

Thanks for letting me know :)

ok, same thing with the 0,22uf in the mid filter section.
you write on the BOM we need a 0,33uf/200V cap for the power supply but it's writted 0,3uf on the layer.

Right about the 0.22uf - I updated rev. 1.01
Regarding the 0.33uf cap - 0.33uf IS a 0.3uf cap ;)
It's just one more decimal written - all 0.3uf caps I've seen so far are essentially 0.33uf - the next step would be 0.39 and one step down would be 0.27.
So as far as I know there's no 0.30uf cap ???

Hi Martin,
I'm trying to find a proper Switchcraft 4PDT switch that's latching, like the one you used and is depicted in the layout drawing. Do you have a model number of the one used on MEQ-5? I have a couple of DPST Televers suitable for EQP-1A, but they won't work here. :-(
Thank you!

Hey Robert,
actually all these Switchcraft Telever (16000 series) switches can be made latching.
I was wondering the same thing too back then.
They are all momentary, but there's a small metal plate on these switches - held by a screw. remove it and it will be latching ;)
-
Did some research and figured out Switchcraft Telever 160012 should work. 4 pole, double throw. Martin, is this what you used? Thanks.

Don't know the exact item number but yes, 4 pole double throw :)
-
The in/out switch appears to be Switchcraft Telever 160012.
Here's a lead for my fellow MEQ-5 builders - this guy sold me two of these for $25 each. Arrived today, very clean. He has 8 left.

you know, I just got to thinking. I've built(Drip) and worked on pultecs before. But i've never opened one of the filter boxes. How is that stuff all stuffed in there? How is it all arranged?

Here's some info http://www.vintagewindings.com/tech%20swag/Pultec-Facts-&-Fiction.pdf
They basically suspended the components in the can filled with melted wax. Which it appears had a tendency to deform or melt the caps to some extent. This concerns me, even though obviously a bunch of units were built like this by the original Pulse Techniques, and tons are still working.
GDIY member Gridcurrent suggested using a piece of perfboard to mount the components to, then attach it to the filter box somehow. That's what I'm going to do on my upcoming MEQ-5 builds. Might also use the spray foam used for sealing cracks on a house to fill the can and reduce any rattling.

Martin,
On the CE metal can caps, did you use insulators in addition to the metal mounting plates? I can't really tell from the chassis pics.
Thanks.

The negative side of these caps has to be grounded to chassis ground.
You can either do that by using a metal mounting plate and scraping off a little bit of the powder coating underneath to provide continuity,
or you can use either a metal mounting plate or an insulator mounting plate - whatever you have at hand and connect one of the negative pins of the cap to one of its mounting screws...

Thanks bro, you're a peach.

does anyone have a source for 2k5 rev log and lin?
-
I bought this one, works tiptop

Mouser has also one

Thanks Kosi!

Yeah, thanks for super quick reply, Kosi!

what did you guys use for the output transformer? Not many options for a 5:1 that will fit. The Sowter is a bit too big. Triads are hard to find and outrageously expensive. A-24 isn’t far behind. The Cinemag is too big too. It’s a pretty tight fit on that chassis.
-
Before I found a nos pair of hs~50 I was going to use the jensen Jt_~10k61~1m output transformers
-
went with Altec 15095A 's on mine.

Finally getting around to these...
Where did you find the 0.17uf caps? Mouser doesn't have them. I've also searched 170000pf and 17nf.
Thanks!

Hey Rob,
just make your own 0.17uf caps by putting 2 caps in parallel...like one 0.15uf + 0.02uf ;)
But depending on which coils you use I would leave the filter can open and measure - so you can tweak for sound and freq. while you're at it ;)
Good luck!

Love you Martin, but you obviously have a lot more time on your hands and motivation than I. :-)
I want to make music first and foremost. I will admit I’m also lazy. If you’ve done the work of listening to caps in all those positions, by all means please post a Mouser shopping cart and make my life easier!!!
Regarding the 0.17uf cap, I think a single part will have less phase shift than paralleled values. I’ve also been suspicious of bypassing caps for the same reason. I ended up buying 13 pcs of 0.17uf to get the two I need. Will be posting the others on eBay, or PM me here if any of you guys you need some.

BTW, what gauge wire did you guys use on the filter unit that will allow 36 conductors to fit through the hole in the filter box and chassis? Is 26 gauge too big?

I went with 22awg everywere at the filters. Originals seems to have 22 or even 20awg there (i can say bullsh*t, it is just regarding the pictures on the internet).

Hey Robert,
actually all these Switchcraft Telever (16000 series) switches can be made latching.
I was wondering the same thing too back then.
They are all momentary, but there's a small metal plate on these switches - held by a screw. remove it and it will be latching ;)
I bought this non- latching Switchcraft switch from ebay. Is there a way to make this latching? I can't work it out...
-
There's usually a little plate on the top held on by a screw. Using or not using this part determines whether the switch will latch or not. I can only see one side of the switch so I assume it's missing.
-
they look like this
-
Thanks for your replies.
Is that picture taken from behind the switch? I don't have the switch with me to check, but I have found this photo I took of it the other day from a different angle...
-
It's unfortunately the wrong one...
In my picture, which is from behind, , you see this clip, which says: non lock. If you leave it away, you have a latching switch. It's simple mechanics. Here's a pic from the side, without the little plate
-
Oh, that’s a bit annoying! Thanks for letting me know!

Letterbeacon,
I have 4 x160012 in the post supposedly scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. Assuming I’m getting what I was promised, you’re welcome to purchase one. They were a bit on the pricey side and of course, I’m in the US so there’s shipping to consider too.
Let me know if you’re interested? We’ll try to work something out.

Anyone have or know where I can find internal pictures of a real MEQ-5 or of their close constructed clone they care to share? I'd love to see how the capacitors and inductors wehre mechanically laid out and / or fastened. My Google searching skills must be off as I can't find much of anything.
Thanks in advance!

225 EUR (excl. VAT if applicable)
20+ chassis would be: 195 EUR (excl. VAT if applicable)
If the price drops to 195 I would be interested in 2.

Little too late. You can already buy them from Martin.

Finished my MEQ0-5 build last night. All seems to be working as expected. Yay!
Checked all voltages marked on the schematic I have. No issues. No distortion, buzzes, hums or other artifacts found or being presented so far...
I inadvertently wired the bypass switch backwards - off was on, on was bypass, so had to re-wire that, but after making that fix, the unit sounds amazing!
My first point-to-point build...
My capacitor planning / execution leaves a little to be desired. Might re-look at that. It wasn't clear to me where or how the caps and inductors were mounted in vintage units, so I ended up throwing caution to the wind.
That aside, I used a vintage Triad HS-56 input transformer (had three of these in my parts cabinet), but so far haven't found a HS-50, so using a Sowter 1290 that I ended up mounting internally.
The bypass switch is a NOS Switchcraft and the frequency rotary switches are ceramic NOS parts sourced from Eastern Europe.
Vintage Windings inductors.
Of course, as soon as I nearly finished my build, I found a NOS Traid R-7A transformer in the original box and another used (?) R-7A which are both in the mail at the moment. Debating whether or not to replace the current Hammond in favor of a vintage R-7A?
With the exception of the reverse pot, the rest are NOS Allen-Bradley pots .
The 2k5 reverse log pot is a Mouser sourced modern part which unfortunately is a mini pot that I kludged into fitting with a home made shim around the bushing to make it fit properly in the chassis. I recently learned of and ordered a small number of full sized 2k5 rev log pots from Blore Edwards Limited in the UK. I'll probably swap that part out just to have a full sized pot in place even though the mini pot is working.
Thanks to Martin for making this chassis available. Great project! A second build is likely ahead of me in the near future! ;-)

last one...

Of course, as soon as my MEQ-5 build was nearly completed, I found a pair of Triad R-7a power transformers and a pair of Triad HS-50’s to compliment the Triad HS-56 input transformer already wired in.
The surgery was successful.
Now my build has a full set of vintage Triad transformers.
Sounds amazing!!!
Cheers, Greg

And, one more...
-
Shout out to Blore-Edwards who made me some custom 2k5 Reverse Log pots for this build.

Excellent quality. Beautiful feel. Like them maybe a little more than the Ohmites!

Your unit looks amazing!
Great work! I used the same set of transformers in my build - and the only problem about having one MEQ-5 in my repertoire is that now I want a second one ;D
I already have the HS56 and a HS50...

Thanks rainton!
I too have another set of Traid transformers and I also have a second build on my mind... ;D
