Anyone with experiences with EH 12AY7 mic pre and ribbon mics?
I will need lots of gain for quiet initime whispering voiceover passages for a upcoming project,
should I modify EH ( and how?) or use some other pre allthogether or
buy Rode D-power pluginamp?
Stupid of me asking like this but as it happens I cannot try beforehand.
The ribbon mic will output something like -53 -55db and the gain available
needed would be +65 - +75db I imagine.

I don't think it will have enough gain.

"This mic pre uses an actual 200-volt supply instead of the 12 or 48 volts you'd get with common models, delivering 50 dB of gain into a high impedance load, and about 40 dB of gain into 600 ohms. "

That's not much gain when we are talking about ribbons.

For most sources, I would say a 60dB capable preamp would be the minimum requirement - especially for your whispered voice source.

It's nicer to have say 66 or 70dB at the ready. Having said that, it obviously has to be relatively noise free gain, but any professional quality preamp will provide this.

In short, the EH preamp looks nice and will probably be great for dynamics and condensers, but for ribbons with a quiet source it may struggle.

Don't quote me on this, but I'd like to know what would happen if a 12AX7 were put in this (apart from the obvious increase in distortion).
