Cloning a good Inductive EQ?

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking about building some inductive EQs, maybe cloning something like the Audiotronics Inductive EQs used in their channel strips. Perhaps making a 4 or 8 channel box.

I'm moving away from the concept of having a full console and more into the summing box/fully modular realm. Therefore, I need EQ.

Is this crazy, impossible, not worth it?

I used to own an Auditronics 'Son of 36 Grand' console. The inductor based EQ was the best part of the console. I've often thought about doing the very thing that you are speaking of but never found a good source of inductors. The sad thing is that I remember boxes of thoses things sitting in a shed behind the Auditronics faciltity in Memphis, Tennesee. When Wheatstone bought them all of that classic stuff just disappeared.

An alternate idea that I have toyed with is building an EQ using inductors from OpAmp Labs. Take a look at http://www.opamplabs.com/87.htm.

i guess inductors aren't so envogue these days....

I just checked out the auditronics schematic for a strip and the EQ circuit looks pretty simple.

I don't think this is the son of the grand.... which is the best auditronics EQ?

The 501 board (Son of 36 Grand) had the same EQ but with one more mid band knob.

The 4 knob EQ as found in the 501 board always sounded good to me. I'd really like to find a modern day source of replacement inductors.

carl... i just read an old thread where youre talking about sourcing inductors and building an EQ, did you get anywhere?

Outside of having a chat with the nice people at OpAmp Labs I have not. During the interim I have picked up and moved from Michigan to the Los Angeles area and that has been way disruptive! I've only recently got my dev bench back together. Perhaps I'll swing down and visit the OpAmp Labs people and pick up a few inductors to play with. They are located Hollywood.
