one of the basic differences is that AEs/EBU (if that's what you mean) is a differential version of S/PDIF.

In other words, you could use something as simple as a high speed opamp (or a transformer?) to bring differential to single ended.

And also, most often, a simple xlr-to-phono adapter does the job.

But don't expect to be able to run 24bit, high fs, id-codes, or any other crap from s/pdif into AES. It'll simply be ignored.

Why? If the equipment uses the very common Crystal AES/EBU receivers all the S/PDIF "crap" will be accepted, since both formats are supported.
