I've been looking at some of Johns ideas as they are practical with the materials that I have on hand.
Regarding the use of a dremmel. I`ve read a bit on this subject. Most opinions I`ve read say the bearings of this tool are too sloppy to do any fine detail that would be required for lettering, scales etc.
You can tighten up the bearings a bit on the Dremel by opening the case and wrapping the bearing with masking tape then reassembling.

Or there is this one that is pretty much ready to go with CNC conversion.
You know what, I hate you guys!

Now you've got me wanting to do this....
yeah tell me about it...

My tax cheque is on its way back to me and I had it all lined up ready to buy a nice little drumkit, but one of those Proxxon mills is very tempting indeed.

By the time I order a few engraved front panels, buy some chassis punches and other bits an peices, and pay shipping for it all to Australia it costs a decent chunk of what the cnc mill costs... Not to mention the time it will probably save me (im not the best metal worker but enjoy CAD)... and the fun to be had  I

Has anyone used the Proxxon MF70 with CNC conversion? It has a relatively small milling area but it wouldn't be hard to do multiple passes for frontpanel engraving and bigger jobs. The examples look pretty good in the ebay auction. Makes me ponder its uses... capsule mounts, capsules, tube socket stands, PCB's, mic grills, engraving, XLR & IEC socket cutouts... and not to mention the zillion custom machined parts you could probably concoct...
