FRED's for lower s/n ratio?

Well, I think what you want is a higher signal to noise ratio...

FRED's can result in less switching noise as they tend to have soft recovery. I suppose that this can have a slight effect on S/N ratio. I'd consider using FREDs in new DIY constructions.

And if this is a low voltage project - schottky diodes are cheap and just as good...

FRED's have a higher voltage drop than the standard silicon diode. From memory I think it is about twice the drop.
