capsule polarization, how does it work?

Hi all,
I've been playing around with the polarization voltage for my G7s to see what kind of variance in tonal balance I can get.
Thanks to Gus for the info :sam:
My voltage started as:
0-70-140V
and then I stepped it down to:
0-35-70V
In my original set of voltages 0 is omni, 70 is cardiod and 140 is figure 8.
So my question is when I lower the voltage to 0-35-70V are the patterns still omni, cardiod and figure 8? It seems to me that the 70 V that's now producing a figure 8 is the same voltage that produced a cardiod pattern in my original set.
Can someone please explain this to me?
Cheers,
Freddy G

Hey Freddy,

It's not the voltage relative to ground that gives you the pattern, but the voltage between the capsule elements (front diaphragm, back diaphragm and backplate). Jakob's G7 page has an excellent explanation of how the whole thing works.

Peace,
Al.
