Summarised as follows:

Biggest change between 70s/80s and now is mechanical construction and wiring
Simpler Frame Designs
 - due to reduction in weight
Which in turn was
 - due to no shielding required
Which in turn was
 - due to simpler modular designs
Which in turn was
  - due to replacement of transformers with electronic balance ins/outs

Frame wiring times reduced
- due to use of ribbon cable

etc...
