OK I'm new to solid state DIY and I'm wondering, How do you know which way the IC's go? Do I place them so the writing lines up the same way as the screen printing on the PCB? I'm about 90% done with my SSL and I don't want to blow anything up.

Normally the ic will have a little dot on it ( could be a black indention). That is normally pin 1.

Plug it in in the same orientation on the checkplot from the gyraf ssl pdf, and you're golden =)

...If not a dot, then a "half-moon" at one end. This is the end with pin one and pin eight. (or pin 14, or 16.... but always the end with pin one!)

The chip looks like this if it has 8 pins:

1....8
2....7
3....6
4....5

the half moon will be at the top, or it will have a dot by pin 1.

14 pin chips will look like this:

1....14
2....13
3....12
4....11
5....10
6....9
7....8

You can figure out how it is for 16 pin chips etc... I'm sure!
