I made this custom faceplate recently for myself.
It is real Zebra wood veneer ...epoxied onto the old faceplate, which was then silkscreened with epoxy ink, then coated with an automotive clear, satin finish.

props man! very cleanly done!

couple of questions...

never seen zebrawood that dark :? you didnt tint or stain it did you?

what kind of epoxy did you use to adhere to the metal?

how did you hold the sheet down flat, im guessing you dont have a vacuum bag. i would figure something that large and perfectly flat would want to ripple or bubble.

what kind of clear did you use and how does it apply?

and what mesh and brand epoxy ink are you using to get that crisp of fonts?

did you screen right on the wood or clear, screen, clear again?

Yes, I precut and stained 3 veneer pieces before gluing them on.

... the old faceplate was stripped down to the bare aluminum, then acid etched, then primed with epoxy auto primer. The veneer was glued on with West Systems clear laminating epoxy clamped in a sandwich of plywood and semi-ridgid foam....for even pressure. Then I cut the holes out of the veneer (following the holes that were in the faceplate, underneath).

more clear epoxy, puddled on, wet sanded flat.

I wish I knew how to screen. I sent it (at that point) to the same screener that does SE's faceplates, so they already had the screens/artwork. They used epoxy ink. I then sprayed two (three?) coats of two-part automotive Ureathane....and left it alone for several days to cure hard before 'messin with it.

NOT a weekend project!!

very nice. i bet that wetsanding took some time. i hate sanding resin.

once again, major props. looks very slick.

if you dont mind me asking how did you get hooked up with the people that screen SE's stuff? and if you dont mind how much did it run you.

screenprints not that hard. especially 1 color with minimal registration.
