Anyone know anything about this company? I have a 2 space unit with 2 compressors, 2 mic pres and 2 EQ's (hi and lo shelf only).

Any thoughts much appreciated on this.

Thanks.

Webster-Chicago/Webcor was known mainly for their wire recorders but also made phonographs, amplifiers and some PA gear.

My very first guitar amp was an ancient (circa 1940s) Webster-Chicago phonograph amplifier. It looked very much like the model 166 but I'm pretty sure mine was all-octal. Phono and mic input were via a Jones plug on the rear of the amp.

EDIT: Whoops, we may not be talking about the same company after all. I just surfed Google and discovered that there was also a company in Racine, Wisconsin that made amplifiers and was called Webster Electric.

weird, i just got some Webster Electric transformers in the mail from our buddy down in Idyllwild.
I guess he didn't think too much of them if he sent them up here.

Also, full props to Pmroz on this 48 thats coming undone at the seams:

So that's where those trannies went. Actually, I've built quite a few great guitar amps out of old Webster Electric PA heads, but please don't tell anyone as they're already going up in price on ebay.

Like this one, which has been painted poorly.

I made a killer Tweed Deluxe head based on this model of Webster, but I paid about 1/3 of his asking price and that included the shipping!

As for those mic input transformers, CJ, I have quite a few of them and was hoping that sending you some by surprise would, ah, prompt you to tell ME if they're any good at all.

Cheers,

Noooooooooo!!!!!!

.......well, ok, if must. I just bought a 44, so I'll be real interested to see how this serious was constructed.

OK, it has become undone, therfore it is.

Webster Electric mic input xfmr. Flat freq response, but kind of lossy.
After unwrapping it, I see why.
Simple pri-sec coil construction.

Pri has 1 henry, UTC A-10 has 10 henries, so it saturates a lot easier.
Sec does not use two pies and foldback winding like UTC A-10.

It's tough love when crackin a Webster:

Damn, tax night.
See ya!
And screw the IRS!
Except the record label.
Orbit is cool.

Wow! Thanks for all the excellent info on these transformers. Love the pics, especially the mad grinder one.

The golden stuff they used to pot these things kind of reminds me of honey oil. Sheesh! I haven't thought about that stuff in a long time. I'm kind of amazed I can still remember it (if you know what I mean).

Cheers,

I think CJ's eyes are already calloused from sparks and flying transformer guts.

I title that picture, "Under Ceej". Not to be confused with Steven Segal's, "Under Siege".
