Can anyone help. I have searched the forum with no reults. I wish to build an amplifier to drive a pair of Yamaha NS10 'Studio' speakers. It has to be a suitable match for these awkward beasts as the current monitoring solution (a Technics HiFi amp) is cack and most likely giving me flaws in my mixes.

I was wondering if using any of the amplifier stages from the Neve 1073 would give me good results. They seem to use standard transistors 2n3055 and it wouldnt be too hard too modify would it? A couple of whacking great output transformers? Any suggestions?
thanks

Me and you keep bumping into each other
I have exactly the same requirement
If somebody can come up with a Bryston board I am agame
In the meantime I have been looking at the "gainclones" - PCBs available on the web

I've made a few gainclones. they are really good... I'm sure they'd drive ns-10s to fairly high levels... totally adequate. You need a good source for transformers to make these work well, if you can dig up a big 150va or higher dual phase toroid that puts out around 30 volts per phase you should be in business. if you can find an even bigger transformer you'll get even more out of the amps. the casework is much harder than the actual project.

about that bryston

I'd like to see something like this here. Don't know much about power amp construction, but it would be nice to learn more.

what there call Gain Clones is the Chip amp module
you should fine a few PCB's about
I think some of the locals here have them for sale

LM3886 isn't it ?

Mikkel has an LM3875

I have short write up on a very old faithful that had a re-work many years ago

I built gainclones for my monitors, work beautifully.

cheap too. I bought a kit which was like 50$ and made life very simple for myself.

i bought a toroid trafo off of ebay for 30$ with something like 300VA and that works great!

Her are a few other solutions:

nice links.... thanks for the info

the Hx200 that is linked is rated 200 Watts/RMS and the NS10M is rated 60 watts (PROGRAM), 120 watts (MAX)

Is the higher output a good match?
... Is the higher output a good match?
yes
and as always you have to operate your equipment and if the RMS levels get high you should lower the volume

The higher power capability is more about headroom and in particular
voltage headroom
than steady state RMS levels
