Hi, I'm building a power supply for a Royer SD tube mic using one transformer for B+ and a separate regulated DC ps for the tube heater. Does the heater supply need to be referenced to ground or should it float? Also, I was wondering what the difference in plate current is when using the 5840 as a triode as opposed to a pentode. I have the data sheet for pentode operation but haven't seen any info on triode use.
Thanks

I didn't read the above properly or even think about it
but
here is a presentation of one of Dave's projects

there might be something on there that can help

Thanks Kev, but the link wouldn't open for me. To be more clear, I have a transformer with a 110v secondary for the B+ and an Acopian 5v DC module that I would like to use for the heater supply. Do I just connect the 5v to the heater, or do I need to connect the negative side of the 5v output to chassis ground?

My favorite version of a Royer design: the Franken-phone.

Is your DC supply +/-5VDC, or is the neg just ground? Also, what does it meter at unloaded, should be above 5V? You might not want to underheat too far. FWIW, the RCA Datasheet (PDF) says 6.3V +/-5%.

Since the 5840 doesn't have a center-tapped heater, I think you just connect your two leads to pins 3 and 6, but wait for someone more knowledgable to confirm that.

Good info on Heater connections in this thread: http://www.groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=9797

Several of the datasheets available on Frank's Electron Tube Pages have plate curves for triode connected operation.

pentode triode switch anyone see a good use for this ?
i like em in gtr outputs but that , of course is different

I've checked it from 3 different locations
:?
sorry but I don't know what's wrong
try refreshing a couple of times

Thanks guys, I found the triode plate curves. Still can't get Kev's link to open. So 5v might be a little low. I haven't gotten to measure the voltage on the module, and have to work long hours for the next few days so I have to set this aside for now. DIY withdrawl!

bummer
try a cut paste into a new browser window

:?
do other Factory pages work ?
http://www.diyfactory.com/
or a fresh one like

Kev, I can't get any of them to open. I tried cut and paste in the original window and a new window in both Safari and Explorer. I know I've been to your site before, but that might have been at a friend's house or at the library before I had a computer. ???!

perhaps your ISP is blocking the Factory ... ...

I just don't know ... sorry
I hope it cure's it's self one day
