"It was always a dream of mine to have this sort of stuff and perhaps some " how to " videos either at the Group DIY web site or on a CDrom."
I have some good news for you, your dream will become reality because Lynn Fuston from http://www.3daudioinc.com/ will release a DVD with a workshop. The name of the workshop was "Preamps in Paradise" and some of the best guys participated.
Here is the anouncement from 27 january 2004:
"3D Audio is hosting Preamps in Paradise, a day full of enlightening discussions about one of our favorite subjects, microphone preamps. The agenda for the day consists of two panel discussions with preamp authorities. The first panel, from 10AM to 1 PM, will feature some of the best known preamp designers in the recording industry.
Geoff Daking-Daking
Doug Fearn-DW Fearn
Greg Gualtieri-Pendulum Audio
Dan Kennedy-Great River
Dave Hill-Cranesong
Grant Carpenter-Gordon Instruments
Hutch Hutchison-Manley Labs
Oliver Archut-AMI
George Massenburg-GML
John Hall-Langevin, Electrodyne, Quad 8
These designers will also have their preamps there for you to see and will be available to answer questions.
In the afternoon from 3PM to 6PM, an amazing panel of recording engineers will offer their opinions on their favorite preamps for various applications.
This panel includes:
Michael Wagener-Dokken, Alice Cooper, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Extreme
Russ Long-Newsboys, Sixpence None the Richer, Rich Mullins, Carolyn Arends, Relient K
Brian Tankersley-Brooks and Dunn, Gino Vannelli, Charlotte Church, Shania Twain, Kirk Whalum, Sawyer Brown
Bil Vorndick-Acoustic Syndicate, Trace Adkins, Asleep at the Wheel, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Allison Krauss, Ralph Stanley, Nashville Bluegrass Band
Fletcher-Mercenary Audio
John Wheeler-Hayseed Dixie
Chris Huston-Led Zeppellin, The Who, War
Preamps in Paradise is going to be an historic event and you are invited to attend.
When: January 31, 2004
Where: Murfreesboro, TN at the Bragg Mass Communications Building in Studio A. Driving directions will be posted below.
There will be limited seating in the main discussion room so you are encouraged to arrive early. Overflow seating with video monitoring will also be provided.
Why: We are videotaping these panels primarily as a way of making a "time capsule" of the state of preamp design at the dawn of the 21st century. We are reaching the end of the first full generation of recorded music and it is time to reflect on the past and discuss the future. A video of these panels will be available on a future product by 3D Audio and will prove an invaluable resource to engineers in years to come.
Why "Preamps in Paradise?"
When this event was originally considered, the design was for the panelists to meet in Hawaii or some other tropical island to discuss one of our favorite topics. Discussing preamps in a tropical setting with sun and sand...sounds like a dream right?
Though the original venue fell through, the concept stayed the same. So wear your favorite tropical shirt (I got mine when I was in Samoa) and come ready for a wonderful day talking about preamps in our mid-winter, middle Tennessee tropical paradise."
I go to this forum for more than 3 years but I supose there are many people who don't know about it so here is the address:
