LA3a gain reduction is finicky

Hi, I have an old LA3a.  The compression/limiting only works in the 50 db of gain mode and not the 30db gain mode, and sometimes the gain reduction doesn't work until you play with the gain for a while.  Any thoughts what might be going on?

In the past I have had a very similar problem.  Let me see if I can recreate it.

I have an LA3A as well, and i think it is an impedence issue if i'm not mistaken. I know there is a mod that makes it work better in a modern studio. I would be interested in finding out about it as well.
