I've been working on this one bit by bit over the past five months.
It's a consoladation of old guitar pedals clones from the good folks over
at buildyourownclone.com.   I bought the bare PCB's and populated
with my choice of components.
The purpose of this thing is to allow me to patch effects into one another for DAW work, analog up some of those soft synths and loops, and maybe
even a guitar or two.

The design is not complete yet, I want to add two circuits of high/low shelf to it, and also level control to the balanced in/out circuit that I am building.
for what it's worth here it is:
http://analogaccess.com/pics_pics/Retro_FX_rig-2005

Yes the ink-fill got smeared during manufacture, which i'm not too pleased with Frontpanelexpress about.   But overall it came out ok, yes?

Any suggestions for EQ circuits would be rad !
I want selectable shelf frequencies with a pot.

cheers guys and gals,
Jay

Dang that's a good idea! Beautyfull! :thumb:

So basically it is a box full of classic guitar effect circuits which you plan to patch into your soundcard to use for inserts?

What did you do about the impedance issues?

By the way, you probably know these already but anyway, these are some great effect oriented sites:

- Links to lots of project sites

- Around one billion effect schemos

- Updated versions of Craig Andertons effects (The founding father of diy effects) With really well organized projects, including a graphic EQ

- A bunch of good stuff

- Haven't really checked this one out, but it has two EQ's

Thats great work. :thumb:

Ive been thinking about doin something similar myself....when i get the time.

Nice pics of nice stuff ! About that Fuzz, the 'attack' dial should tell which one it is, but I can't remember it right now. Please tell !

FWIW here some pics of something I did a long ago, stopped and actually should be continuing

On board we have the Univox Superfuzz with a bass/treble section added (taken from the Boss FZ-2 which happens to be ... a Superfuzz-clone  ).
Other module is a combination of a MXR Dynacomp & a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer. Note the full guerilla breadboard style, no etched PCBs around - but it works :thumb:
Both FX are relay-bypass, switched by the black plastic jacks or a front panel switch. The metal jacks are audio I/O.

Bye,

Peter

Thanks for the kind words and advice!
hejsan, thanks for those great links man.

Peter here is the link for the Fuzz board :
http://buildyourownclone.com/fuzz.html

They don't supply a schematic, but do tell that it comes from the exact specs of the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face circuit.

And Peter, those modules that you breadboarded are sick, man! wow that must have taken a long time.

cheers guys,
Jay
Peter, is that strip-board?

You are crazy. That looks mad!
There are Eurocards with all 'isles'. I won't be making pics of the solderside !

Have been making stuff like that for years - and it works fine, but has resulted in two things:
#1 It's been enough like that - if I can get an etched PCB I prefer that route
#2 but I'm still a bit amazed that people feel they need to have an etched PCB from 2 components upwards  Just do it !

At work we're not doing it like that any longer, but I could show you some card made by a colleague: one of those longer Eurocards, fully packed with DIL-14 packages (shoulder to shoulder) and the spaghetti underneath. It works ! Perfect for debugging.

I see, thanks. Thought to have seen 'Attack' as the original label on a vintage circuit, but am not sure.
Actually too bad they don't supply a schematic. For who it applies it'd learn people more about electronics, as opposed to following the supplied instructions. Giving the schematic (it's no secret, right ? )would augment the experience.

And Peter, those modules that you breadboarded are sick, man! wow that must have taken a long time.
Nope, took me just a few minutes. I gathered the parts and sent the whole lot to the Beh.-fab in China

But serious, yes, quite a while.

Bye,

Peter

Ok, what are your favourite guitar pedals of all time?

Mine is the EH Small Stone. I also like the Big Muff, Fuzz Face and My Dod Analogue Echo which I run at a higher voltage.

I had plans to make a guitar FM synthesizer pedal and a granular synthesizer pedal, but I never got round to doing it.... I designed a MIDI controller for a POD instead.

This thread will explode in length from now on, do you realize that ?
I like the Univox Superfuzz a lot. So also the Boss FZ-2. The Rockman stereo echo (BBD) is also a nice one for slapback without tape-echo hassle. Tubescreamer with modified clipping diodes is a reliable workhorse. And for bass I've never done without the black/yellow RealTube-pedal (modest settings), as strange that may sound.

As for over the top weirdness, imho that one has to be this monster below. It's also on the pic above, top left. I found it at a flea market for next to nothing and it's really bizarre: the Maestro USS-1A (Universal Synthesizer System, by Oberheim)

 Ah, OK. But that controller is finished & up & running, right ? The original intend sounds like something that could be tweaked for ages.

I dont normally use much effect for my guitar.
But when i do, i use the carl-martin stuff.
Their VCA comp. is pretty good. A bit pricey though.

Haha!

Yeah, my Dod pedal is a BBD device - works better at higher voltages. You can get them for £35 new too, even though they are discontinued. It can oscillate and do some very f**ked-up stuff too...

This looks like it is worth a lot of money. Reminds me of the ARP Avatar. I don't know if you know the band "Bis", but when I was recording over there, they had one, and Steve from the band told me that if you ever see one then buy it. No questions, just buy it!

Yeah, I made the controller for my University final-year project-advisor as I don't own a POD and wouldn't want one either.

My Granular synth was either going to be a complex analogue design or use a Motorolla 6808 (and a lot of assembly language programming!) and my FM synth effect would have maybe been analogue.

I did quite a bit of experimentation programming in C-Sound with these types opf effects in the digital domain and was quite amazed at what you could do. My intention was to comnpletely alter the character of the guitar sound. I had been listening to a lot of Tom Morrello at that time....

Do you guys know of any extremely heavy, deep, resonant flangers which are available?

I always wanted a Lovetone "?" / Flange With No Name, but it was too expensive.... I really want that stretching, time-warp, pitch-shifting weird sound.

The FM Synth and granular synth pedals sound brilliant!! I'd love to hear those if you ever complete them.

Does the Eventide DSP7000 count?

Indigom: Nice custom rack! Who´s the maker of the 19" box all good stuff is fitted in?

Clintrubber: Is that a Schroff box you are using for your work?
I want to see the solderside! :green:
Please... :green:

Thank you Bjorn,

The enclosure is made by Par-metal.com in the USA. The front panel was made by frontpanelexpress.com also in the USA.
I still need to finish the back and mount the jacks and IEC power connector of course.
Cheers~

Most likely, but I'm not sure. Saved it from the bin at work.
As you can see it's been used for other stuff before, but once fully populated with cards you can't see that any more.

It's not very fancy, but I just had a look at that stuff and it wasn't as messy as I thought to remember it.
So I guess I just need two disclaimers: it's from years ago and I could have used a few kilograms less solder

UFO-sounds :thumb: Analog delays are so nice.

This looks like it is worth a lot of money.
I once saw a Maestro pricelist, it was the most expensive box of the list. The unit from the pic seems in better condition, mine has a missing slider-knob & some sliders aren't as easy going anymore. For weird stuff this box is still nice. It's in fact a combination of some synth building blocks without an oscillator.
Reminds me of the ARP Avatar. I don't know if you know the band "Bis", but when I was recording over there, they had one, and Steve from the band told me that if you ever see one then buy it. No questions, just buy it!
Don't know Bis, but I do have read about that Avatar. That ARP looks more serious as well, the Maestro is actually ehh, nice but a bit ugly  actually over-ugly with all those colours. I like it !

Ahh, you're a fan of the other side ? V-Amp ?
