I think the main appeal of the GSSL is that it's easy. I would love to build a 33609/J because I FAR FAR FAR prefer it across a mix than the SSL I have been using, but to be completely honest, the Neve intimidates me. Plus projects like the GSSL have been tested time and time again, there's a PCB for it, there's a huge meta for it, pretty much everyone on these boards is familiar with it, etc. There aren't really any other compressor projects appropriate for mix bus compression that have that kind of support behind them (unless you think 1176's or LA-2's work across the mix bus - which I don't).
