sounds samples will come soon :guinness:

I know this group is not really a synth group but anyway here's my new sid synth that (Schem are in this page http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid.html)
I've made over the past month. Later on I'll have a page with the construction pictures.
It's a 8580 sid, pcb (for core and sid modules) are from this page http://www.avishowtech.com/mbhp/, I've made the optimized psu and the din module myself.
I've added a autofilter based on the Dr Quack (schem in generalguitargadget.com)
and a frequency booster from craig anderton's book "diy for guitarists"
I've used and old Jazz drive case from maczone that I've painted in white with spraycan automotive paint, and made the wood panels, then tinted them. 3 layers of VIP redwood base ref# 480/3. I think the wood was pine not sure though.
writing is lazertran inkjet with 3 layers of enamel on top. I've used Freehand to do the graphics and designs.
Parts like knobs, switches and buttons are from my local electronic store.

hope you'll like it because this forum has been a great source of knowledge and inspiration.
so thanks to everyone.

cheers,

Nicolas

thanks for the comments guy's

the sound, well as always hard to describe, heavy bass, filter is not that powerfull, the dr quack does a great job making it a bit more analog if this make sense...
there are some sound samples here http://www.ucapps.de/ without the dr quack of course. all in all you can get some very cool weird sounds out of it.
there's a powerful editor too. You can get pretty deep into it.

Regarding the upload of the soft, I did two sids and never had a problem uploading the os.
I've used the mios studio application which make the task very easy and +- problemless.
http://www.midibox.org/mios_studio/ make sure the midi connection is ok. A lcd makes the task easier. (you see what you're doing)
I know that from mac os x it's pretty complicated, so I've found a friend with a pc and everything went smootly with mios studio. I've uploaded the mios os first and then the sid application. there's a really good walkthrough here:

http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_sid_walkthrough.html

let me know if I can help more,

cheers,

Nicolas

What did you use for the power supply. I used the commodor PSU adapted as described at ucapps, but apparently people have found this to cause problems, because it doesn't have enough smoothing.
hum... strange I thought the original psu was the best way to go. My first sid, I've used Gyraf small psu for the calrec eq. It worksfine but is pretty noisy. daisy chained the psu from one module to the other.

the 2nd sid, the one in the pic, I've used an old c64 psu, and to me, it seems to work really well.
Check the optimized psu diagram, it does magic to the noise. Right now I'm happy with the c64 psu, and don't hear any diff between the 2 sids except for the noise.

hope this helps :?

Hey Nicolas

You have a beautiful box there. very nice work. I like very much the idea to to add those processors to the synth.
Can you give us a link with info/schematics for the Auto Filter and the Frequency Booster please?

Chrissugar you need to read, you just can't look only at the pictures  :green: :green:

from first post

here's the exact page for the Dr quack http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=120&Itemid=164

For the frequency booster the schem is in the book. It's pretty cheap around 10 euros.
You can find a pcb layout for the booster here (no value though you need to buy the book)

I've been helping a friend with exactly this project, but he has had problems uploading the core module software. Did you experience any difficulties with this ??
I've been playing with sid's and pic's too. I've seen two problems with the core software upload. The older pic-burner on the midibox website seems to expect a com port with a higher voltage than most com ports in modern computers offer. That might be the problem. There's a new pic burner for the paralel port that solves that problem. I have built something like this myself so when you need pic's burned you can pm me and we can arrange something (although there's probably someone in the uk who can do that for you)

The other thing is that not all midi-interfaces like big sysex dumps. When you have problems uploading the mios and sid software via midi you might want to try another midi interface.
