Your opinion is correct, the MTR-90mk1 and mk2 sounds very different,
mk1 have more audible character because among other things it have transformers on the output and also on the record head when it work in sync/playback mode.
The mk2 is cleaner and have lower noise and it have also active balanced in and outputs, it is a better machine in many aspect, but the mk1 have more "dirty" transformer sound that can be nice in some recording applications.
