hi all,
im hoping to find some mci console gurus for a chinwag about
replacement mic pre amps(want to make my own)
automation/power supply stuff/eq

with regards to upgrading/testing/

console works great but it's time to pimp it!

thankyou

these consoles are great in that they plain. they dont muck up your mix but i doubt youll get much pimp out of it. i hear that the jh400 has some punch to it but i havent worked on one. the 600s are very plain sounding but i have done many very clean and enjoyable records on them.

blevinsaudioexchange.com is where the pimps are.

hi
yeah i just paid up for the wonderfull steve sadlers support scheme
at blevins,
i just wondered if anyone here/ fellow owners/service guys or general
guru's could shed some light on a few things
first off i need to figure out how to squeeze some api312's into the chassis
ive got a pair of john hardy cards in a couple of channels already
and a pile of old 2520's that look bored and in need of a new home,
i know i probably cant fit the 2503 in there, but the input trafo/opamp should be possible

thanks for your reply

doubt you can squeeze the api as a 321 in there. you have a 600? the daughter board of the eq will come off and you could do some good mods there.

hi
have any of you seen the john hardy card,
it's an m1 type without the o/p trafo

it's a square jensen jt 16b+990c+servo and that fits, ive got a couple.

i just want to shoe horn in 312's but without the o/p trafo
im fed up with my patchbay being a bowl of spaghetti all the time!

uk
what boards are those cyril has, are they automation master cards?

thanks

in reply to amorris
i'd love to know some mods for the eq
i recently recapped a spare channel but it seems that it didnt really need doing as their was minimal benefit, bit like when i put a burr brown in the high end of the eq and a few other places on another spare,
it was different but in a splitting hairs kinda way?

what would be the main eq mod?

thankyou very much guys this really is great to get a few things of my chest ref mci

Note sure mate - give him a call - his phone number is on the Raindirk web site
Tell him you are a friend of Simon from Peterborough and ask about the MCI cards he has with the DBXs on

hi
yeah ill bell him tomorrow and see what he's got.
thanks for that,

just to clarify what im trying to do,
it's put a redesigned/layout board not original api312 cards.
in place of the existing mci mic pre card,
with input trafo hanging off the side like a john hardy mci600 card,

thanks guys

hi
just had a thought,
would their be anything wrong/losses if i were to house the output transformers in a couple of spare slots in my patchbay,
there are preamp out and return sockets their that i could if feasable
normalize to the transformers sat nearby.
so the preamp out would be fed by the 2520 or 990
out to the 2503 or somesuch, then back to the preamp return
which runs on to the eq/buss sections

or am i talking newbie rollox?

thankyou

Hello!

We have a MCI 400 in our studio, it was actually owned by Pink Floyd before and is HEAVILY modified.

I know exactly how to change mic-pre (and another IC's aswell) since I have done it many times.

You need to use a regular DIL8 socket (with a NE5534 for example) and cut n bend some of the legs. I also put a 22pF ceramic kondenser between two of the legs.
If this is what you are trying to do then let me know and I will give you a more detailed desciption on how to wire the legs.

The original ICs are practically impossible to get hold of in my experience.

hi
thanks for your response
that 400series sounds like a great console,

im not replacing or changing the existing mic pre ic's etc
im going to whole sale change the mic pre cards out
and fit api312's in their place,
im working on the board layout in eagle at the mo

have you fitted any DOA in place of ic's on your console?

thankyou

i'll keep you posted on how i get on,
your console has more space for mods than mine(and less need for them)
you could fit in api stuff easier than i,

all my api stuff is in racks at the mo,
cant wait to get them inside the desk,
i like a nice clean patchbay, at the mo it's spaghetti
cos of all the external mic pre's etc

thanks

feel free to use this thread for any ideas you have for your console etc
