Worked on one of these yesterday. Has anyone here used these for recording, and what were your impressions? looks to be nothing more than 1st stage of a 12AU7 DC coupled to the second stage with the signal taken off the cathode of the second stage to drive a transformer.

Doesn't appear to be much for the $300 they want for them on eBay, although it's a sturdy box - you could use it as a wheel chock for a 5 ton truck!

Main distortions of Ampeg SVT indeed are generated by triodes + cathode followers + transformers. However, they really are much worse than such simple circuit can simulate. Most significant is the ground loop in the tube preamp that adds 120 Hz (100 Hz in Europe) hum and shortcut by high frequencies when you turn volume all way down and put a switch in the middle position that causes high frequency oscillations.

I don't know people who loves distortions of abused cathode followers, but may be some really do... Especially, when they are symmetrical...
