wierd capacitance readings

I got a bunch of axial caps from school, and decided that I should measure them to verify they still are what they say they are, and I'm getting some very odd readings.

I measured a 220uF cap, and my meter said 135uF, tried about 4 others, all about the same, tried another 470uF , and got about the same.

What am i doing wrong here?

I presume you are observing polarity.

How does the cap meter do on smaller value film caps? It could well be your meter, possibly on that particular range.

Check the battery, cap readings are the first thing to go awry in a meter with a flattish battery

FWIW, my RCL-meter (Escort ELC-131D) does an alike thing, indicating lower values for electrolytics, while it's spot-on for the pFs & nFs.

Can you switch the test frequency ? On my meter there's 120Hz & 1kHz, I get more uFs @ 120Hz.
