No schematic. But I've something like a pcb overlay which I'd done because one channel failed. I wanted to make a schematic out of it but I got it fixed before doing this. Do you have a problem with yours?

I don´t have it, but seems an interesting DIY project. There seems to be something "magical" inside. On one hand seems the components cost is not high, buying new is affordable, and guys like Mark Knofler are using it on gigs and on studio. Also in many blind comparisons on audio forums end as winner. So must have something interestind on it´s design.

Seems is based on the IC INA217 followed by an opamp. Still a mistery why wins constinuosly blind tests, over high-boutique preamps, since it´s based on a 5$ chip..

I'd seen OP275 and SSM2017 inside.
I think 5$ is much for a chip  The Neve Portico is full of 30cent ICs (and it sounds very good).
The SSM/INA's are also used by SPL (Goldmike Preamp), D&R mixing desks, behringer (in their older stuff), lake people, tl audio, joe meek, i think millennia also but dunno exactly.

I was interested in this pre as well.I have seen posts by Jim Williams saying that it would be an easy DIY,and I think he advised useing a better chip.I think he upgraded some of these. The posts are on gearslutz,do a search.I would like to look at one. They are 1na217 into a op275,does not seem that hard to do.

You can be as skeptical as you like. I know i was. There is nothing in the pricerange that comes anywhere near imho. I recomend these to all my clients who want a pre at home. Mick Hinton is a cool guy. Good honest simple products at a realistic price. FAR better than many expensive "producer packs" which can make for loads of hassle in the mix. I don't actually own any, but wouldn't hesitate if i didn't have the esoteric stuff I do have.

His limiter/compressor is the mutts nutts and Very high on my "musthave" list.

1pennies worth.
I started to draw a schem for that box and honestly, it's just a couple of IC wired together exactly following the datasheet circuits. I can't believe it's any good.
Do you mean the shem of the DAV? Cool!.

So I woul like any of you like wins on blind tests like this:

There are a lot of thread like this. To my like, I think maybe have some non-linear gain, compression or something that gives people prefer it over other high-boutique pres.
Mark knofler uses it as prefered, so something extrange it has.. would be nice to find out why all this love for it..

I'm sure you guys already noticed this, but I found it interesting to see the use of non-polarised electrolytic caps in there.

I have a rack of four Beyer preamps with eqs. which use the SSM2017 - I should maybe post photos of it here sometime as it's an interesting one and a very short run.

Anyone managed to open the files posted by Frank? Here there is a 403 error page all the time. :?

The combination SSM2017 - OP275 reminds me of a ELEKTOR design from '97. They used half of the OP275 as buffer on the output of the SSM and the other half as servo for the buffer.

PM me for a copy.

Cheers,

Mike

NE5534. The portico comes with an external switching psu... notebook-like. Omrom Relays, mica caps, smd parts for the non audio parts, a cheapy looking output trasnformer, a DCDC converter. I don't like the EQ very much but the preamp sounds wonderful. These pushswitches are very cool. Illuminated from the bottom with SMD leds. Anyone knew where to get them? They fit on the mini alps switches.

There are also some pics of the TLaudio, Millennia, Focusrite preamps. I got a bunch of preamps for an article in a trade magazine. It was interesting to hear how bad the cheap units sounds. :green: The Millennia was so good! Although the opto compressor was hard to adjust. And I decided not to buy any focusrite stuff.

Hey SALSA. I would like to see the ELEKTROR article! Thanks.

Hey Frank, thank you but I can open only the second link.
If I go to the second I can open only NRG DIY WEBSITE and the NRG RECORDING, but no chance for the NRG DIY FORUM.

Goede dag. Aha? Het Elektuur :) Dank u!
Ik begrijp u niet. Hoe zeg je dit in het duits?

:) Good that schematics are readable from any people :)
Thanks!

Tot ziens,
