Right , and that is my intention to make use of the unused winding ,
since i have a hole to fill , and that , it will be isolated enough to not
affect the circuit .
Just have to take it apart one more time !

I'd use a buffer circuit, as wiring a vu directly to the output can distort the sound.[/quote]

How could feeding an isolated transformer output to a meter distort the sound? I have all of my API meters hooked up like this, and they sound like they did without the meter.

You're right.
I wasn't thinking about the extra winding on the API o/p xfmr.

I can hear a difference with urei 1176 meters in, but they're tapped right from the main output.

I agree unbuffered is not a good idea , but at least in this case it is
isolated good enough it seems , i install switches to cut them out so they don't slam

what file sharing does anybody use ?

i tried this one for stereo Toms , [ sorry about the dead skins & tuning ]
one channel is cinemag / 990 and the other channel is the real 25*20
with the a.p.i. repro from Ed , both channels original a.p.i. outputs
separate but identical large diaphram dynamics were used,
I put one channel out of phase to match level with the null and then restored and there you are .
maybe i'll get to gtrs after the weekend but gotta work

Hello, thanks for putting up examples, it's so helpful when having to decide on all the DIY options.

I like the left channel best, it seems punchier and clearer than the right. It was most obvious on the high tom, though. Do I get the answer, or do you wait 'till more people have chimed in?

No , for being the only reply Ill tell you the left chanel was the
cinemag 990 . [ Apparently i could've picked a better filehost ! ]

I do intend to get a couple more samples up before i make the
channels A.P.I. [ save the 990s for the fabio version ]

thanks , regards Greg

Yes, it wasn't straightforward to get to the files.

I'm wondering whether it's the DOA or the I/P tranny that makes the difference. Any chance of swapping DOAs?

I shouldv'e swapped them at the same time , another thing on the list to do , got sugestions for a beter filehost site ?

what do you think is the best sound to judge it by ?

regards Greg

Is mp3.com stil running? Used that many years ago. Otherwise, I wouldn't know.

I think any sound with both pitch and percussive elements will do. The toms were fine, I think acoustic guitar, bass or vocal would do equally well. It's more a matter of the application in mind - someone building 8 pre's would be most interested in drums, one with a single channel would want a vocal sample.
