Info on mic capsules "EQ"

Reading the mic meta I noted that, apart obvious mechanical differences (diameter, number of diaphrams, center/ring teminations etc.), capsules can be different - I'm not sure to be right on this - in EQ requirements: in other words some needs a very flat preamp, others a particular "shaped" response from the preamp.

Can you please elaborate a little? Can I try every type of capsule on a given mic, and expect only different "sonic signatures" (from "budget china" to "expensive german" of course), or a capsule can sound totally wrong due to unmatched mic preamp?
