Yes a Gainclose Amp would be a very good place to start....I built a Gainclone Powewr amp as the Power stage in my new DIY Guitar amps and it sounds good and goes very loud.....

Some the the best Gainclone chips are the LM3886/LM4781 and each Cheap can deliver up to 50w into 8 ohms or 65w into 4 ohms.....The chips can also be easilly bridged/Paralelled to achieve Powers of 250w or more Per channel into very low impedances......

The chips are so easy to implement that you can even wire one up P2P...It is actually more difficult to build the Power supply as you need about 10,000uF of Filtering on each Power rail per chip in the amp....
so if you were to build a stereo amo useing 4 Paralleled LM3886 chips per channel for 200w per side which means you are going to need up to 160,000uF of power supply Filtering which can get a bit costly pluss you will need about a 24v,0v,24v 80vA for every LM3886 Chip you use so a 800vA Transformer will be good enough to drive 200w per sode into 8 ohms.....
